A propos de cet article

Only edition of this striking and lavishly produced wartime photobook, issued in English by the Asahi Shimbun, one of Japan’s oldest and most influential newspapers. Intended for overseas audiences at a pivotal stage of the Pacific War, Victory on the March presents a carefully curated visual account of Japan’s early military successes through dramatic sheet-fed photogravure illustrations and accompanying propaganda texts. Published at the high-water mark of Imperial Japan’s expansion across East and Southeast Asia, it reflects official efforts to shape international perceptions of the Greater East Asia War and to promote the ideological narrative of Japanese leadership in the region. Particularly revealing are sections devoted to prisoners of war, illustrated with photographs and captions emphasizing humane treatment, medical care, and religious accommodation, offering a vivid example of contemporary wartime perception management. The volume stands today as an important primary source for the study of Japanese propaganda, wartime imagery, and the visual rhetoric employed during the conflict’s most consequential phase. Although presumably produced in substantial numbers, complete copies, especially those retaining the fragile original dust jacket, are now decidedly scarce. Heiting & Kaneko, The Japanese Photobook, p. 188; Morioka, Books on Japan 1931-1972, pp. 98-9 (without dust jacket). Quarto (29.3 x 25.8 cm). Text in English. Profusely illustrated throughout with photogravure plates. Original pictorial wrappers, preserved in the scarce dust jacket. Jacket rubbed and with a few small defects. A very good copy of this visually compelling and uncommon wartime publication.…
