2 volumes, complete as issued. Bound in period 3/4 crimson crushed and polished Levant morocco over marbled boards by Bradstreet's, spines with raised bands and refined gilt floral tooling within gilt-ruled compartments, covers bordered in gilt, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. The bindings are fine, the texts have some foxing, browning, and the occasional smudge. Volume I dated 1858; volume II dated 1859. Notable for the 46 full-page steel-engraved illustrations, plus vignettes (after drawings by the author). over 60 engraved Illustrations. PROVENANCE: Engraved bookplates of Edward S. Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. Two volumes (complete). Two placid books. Both books have an ex-libris for T Thackeray (lateral kin of William Makepeace through his uncle) with coat of arms, on the front pastedowns. On the opp. first-free-page of volume has the signature of Constance Thackeray (again lateral kin) - at the time living at Roughton Hall. Also in volume I is a note: "Miss Thackeray, Hotel de Londres". Constance also signed the series title page of volume II. Both books are suitably vintage. Green boards with stamped black decoration on the front; blind stamped with gilt titling on the spines; the backs have blind stamped decoration. The contents of both books have some very light, mild evidence of age with some spit-spots of foxing. Otherwise, the contents are contented, clean and clear, companionable, convivial, certain, agreeable.
