A propos de cet article

First edition of this sentimental comedy by one of the most prolific playwrights and songwriters of the Restoration. The play, first staged in the autumn of 1679, follows the intertwined stories of four couples representing four different kinds of love and marriage, each worked out after complications aided by disguise and mistaken identity. The Virtuous Wife was "quite evidently inspired by Dryden's Marriage a la Mode and its main theme, dealing with the marriage of Olivia to Beverley under the impression that he was Beauford, has reminiscences of the conceptions of Mrs Behn. It is, however, not so farcical as his earlier works, and in a way marks a progress on the part of D'Urfey towards presentation of characters of the manners type - particularly in the persons of Wilding, Townly, and Livia - in another, it marks a step towards the elaboration of sentiment" (Nicoll, p. 262). The song that begins "Sawney was tall and of Noble Race", inserted in the third act, was also separately printed as a broadside and became very popular, not only in England, but also in Scotland (as did many of D'Urfey's songs). The melody was later used by Alan Ramsey in 1725 and by John Gay in 1729. D'Urfey (c.1653-1723) wrote some 500 songs and 32 dramatic works, 22 of which were comedies. "His characteristic style of frenetic town farce, relying heavily on character-types (the rake, the fop, the jilt, and so on), complex plots, and the contrived situations of intrigue comedy (disguise, mistaken identity, eavesdropping, and the like), interspersed with well-placed songs typically performed by actors rather than professional singers, was calculated to entertain" (ODNB). ESTC R17715. Allardyce Nicoll, A History Of Restoration Drama 1960-1700, 1928. Quarto (220 x 162 mm). Mid 20th-century brown morocco-grain sheep, spine tooled in blind, red morocco label. Gift inscription on front free endpaper: "Michael Ingram 1940, from Mumph". Minor scuffs to leather, colour skilfully retouched at spine ends and corners, short closed tears in lower margin of B2 and D4 touching a couple of lines of text on each page, both sometime repaired without loss, contents uniformly lightly browned, occasional minor mark, faint foxing to endpapers, else clean. A very good copy.…
