210267. Back, Howard. THE WATERS OF YELLOWSTONE With Rod and Fly. 12mo illus. [5 x 7 ¼ ] New York: Dodd, Mead & Co. xii + 149 p. 1938. 1st Ed. [Cat. 2021] 210267 k- Howard Back, a British transplant who had fished extensively in Great Britain and Europe, wanted to get information on fishing in Yellowstone in 1936. He found no written information, but visited for a few weeks in 1936, followed by over 6 weeks in 1937. He was entranced with the variety and quality of fishing in the greater Yellowstone area, so he wrote this book for the use of other fishermen. He writes of the Park, the fishes, fishing in the various rivers, streams, and lakes of the area, access to different areas, all based on the personal knowledge he acquired. The book has both photographs and line drawings showing access to various areas. He writes in a very easy style, describing the various venues like he was guiding you the the better fishing. I first visited Yellowstone Park in 1950 with my parents when I was 17. I was obsessed with the accounts by Ed Hewitt who fished in the park in 1880 as a boy of 15, and supplied trout to the Army encampments in the Park. He caught fish on fly and grasshopper, and supplied the 40 man camp with fish every day. He was probably the first person to fly fish in the Park. When he returned in 1914, he fished with a dry fly, and caught many brown and rainbow trout which had been stocked in Park waters. In 1950, I fished the Yelllowstone River and Lake, Lewis Lake and River, and Heart Lake. I caught cutthroat to 4 ¾ lb. in Heart Lake on flies, and 3 lb. browns in Lewis Lake outlet. I returned to Yellowstone in 1952 to work as a USFWS summer biologist on trout investigations in the Park. I fished many areas in the South & Southeast Arm of Yellowstone Lake that Howard Back dreamed about in his book. I have been going back to the area ever since. His book is still a very useful account of the fishing in Greater Yellowstone. The 1st Edition is scarce. The 1st Edition is scarce, especially with a DJ. This is my personal copy, purchased in 1957, with my signature and address label on front free end paper. DJ is Good, frayed on spine ends & edges, & encased in mylar protective cover, Book is Fine. $310.
