Tall octavo, pp. [1-4] 1-178 [179-188: ads], fly leaves at front and rear, publisher's decorated terra cotta cloth, front panel stamped in silver and dark brown, spine panel stamped in sliver. First published U.S. edition, first printing (preceded by a 1894 copyright edition). Preceded by a handful of copies printed in New York in late 1894 by Theo. L. De Vinne & Co. to secure U.S. copyright and Constable's 1895 UK "Acme Library" edition. A short sensational novel set in a remote fishing village on the Aberdeenshire coast of Scotland. Dalby 8c. Signature dated 28 July 1938 on the front free endpaper. Bookplate of collector Oswald Train affixed to the front paste-down. Cloth dust soiled, mainly front panel, and lightly rubbed at spine ends and corners, a very good copy. (#177678).
