FIRST EDITION 1862. 8vo, approximately 175 x 105 mm, 7 x 4 inches, folding chart at rear: "Consumption of Wine 1791-June 30, 1861", pages: [5], iv-xiv, 1-365 including index, complete with half-title, rebound in modern quarter calf over marbled boards, new cream endpapers. Neat old repair to inner margin of half-title, folding table lightly browned and slightly dusty on blank side, pale age toning to pages, a few tiny ink spots. A good copy. The book covers early English vineyards, chapters on a wide variety of European wines, madeira, Champagne, wines of Australia, French wines, wine as remedy, adulteration, wine drinking, port, sherry, Tokay, Medoc. Tight and VG in its pebbled, blindstamped, olive-green cloth, with still mostly-bright gilt-titling along the spine. 2 very small paper-stains to the panels, light splotching and soiling along the rear panel. Still though very presentable. Internally, minor soiling at the rear pastedown, mild spotting to the preliminaries, small, neat former owner name at the top of the title page. 16mo, a number of charts and classifications complementing the text, including a large fold-out chart ("Consumption of Wine from 1791 to June 30, 1861") at the rear.
