Item description from seller

[i], pp. 2-408, 8 pages of advertisements. In Good condition. Green fabric-covered boards with blind tooling, loss to fabric especially at bottom edges. Corners worn with fabric loss and bumping. White marks on front and back covers. Gilt titles on spine in excellent condition. Fabric frayed at top and bottom of spine, affects slightly gilt meander especially at the top. Book plate on front pastedown. Stamp with the name of George M. Furby on front fly leaf and title page. Some foxing throughout, particularly on protective tissue between engravings. George M. Furby may be the George M. Furby of Port Hope, who was the eldest son of William Furby, who is considered to have been the "father of journalism" in Port Hope. George was the manager of the Midland Loan and Savings Co. in the early 19th century, and took over one of his father's papers, the Durham Guide, in 1856. This is the first American Edition of The Way We Live Now, published by Harper & Brothers of New York. The Harpers were an influential nineteenth-century American publishing family, particularly famous for their periodicals, namely Harper's New Monthly Magazine, Harper's Weekly, and Harper's Bazaar. Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) was an English Victorian novelist, author of 47 novels known for their commentary on social and political issues of the day. Though not hugely popular when it was published, The Way We Live Now, has come to be identified as his greatest work. The work first appeared in serialized from, and is one of the last Victorian novels to be released in this way. Inspired by the financial scandals of the early 1870s, this novel is a political satire of the corruption Trollope identified as being rampant in British politics and business.
