A propos de cet article

This is a charming book, both in content and design. The title that appears on the lovely and highly-decorated embossed cover and the spine is "The Wedding Day in Literature and Art," which sounds like it might be an academic study, but the oh-so-lengthy subtitle that is included on the title page gives the game away: "A Collection of the Best Descriptions of Weddings from the Works of the World's Leading Novelists and Poets with Reproductions of Famous Paintings of Incidents of the Nuptial Day." There are 81 extracts, some of them by the "usual suspects" like Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (each of them have are represented by multiple quotations) but there are some surprises as well, such as an extract from Edgar Allan Poe's "The Bells" and from writers who are not so well known today as they may have been when this first-edition copy was published in 1900. There are also 35 black-and-white plates within its 294 pages, which, at the time, would have meant this book was copiously illustrated. We have included a laid-in bit of ephemera that came tucked inside the front cover: the program from a "Shakespeare Evening" performed by students of Glendale College-officially Glendale Female College-on Saturday, April, 1907. A women's college, in existence 1854 to 1929, it has been variously described as a women's college, a junior college, a finishing school, and a boarding school, and one can imagine the original teenage owner-whose name is apparently the one that appears on the front free endpaper, dated 1909 in Glendale-mooning over the romantic quotations and illustrations. Yet they have maintained their popularity: "The Wedding Day in Literature and Art" went through two more editions in the middle and late twentieth century. As stated, this copy is a first edition, later printing. Copyright is 1900, but the date 1906 appears under the publisher's name on the title page. Besides a previous-probably the original-owner's name, year, and location written in ink on the front free endpaper, a return address sticker with another owner's name and address is adhered to the front pastedown. (The two women share a surname. It makes one curious.) Other than that, there are no markings within the book, nor are there any tears. The pages are deckled on the fore and bottom edges and gilt at the top. Light age toning. Bumping and shelf wear on the book's corners and rubbing to the bottom edges. The binding is tight and square. The volume is bound in dark blue cloth with an attractive illustration on the front cover that combines printing, gilding, and embossing; a large upright white oval is centered on the cover, rimmed by gilt beading and gilt bows holding garlands of greenery with gilt stars. The title appears in the oval, in gilt cursive. It appears in the same lettering on the spine, with a similar garland, and the publisher's name in gilt at the bottom.…
