Hoffman's first book, a teenage novel set in Italy, tells the story of a young girl, Lucia, into whose hands the safety and care of the Beast is entrusted for a time by its Guardian. Lucia, part English part Italian, shares her trust with her cousin Barnaby and with an old woodcarver. Together they protect the Unicorn from men who have traced it to Italy and who seek to capture it and use its magic power for selfish and evil puproses. The story tells about the adventures of the cousins and how the designs and plans of the hunters are thwarted. Brown cloth with gilt titling to spine, top of textblock edge is brown, brown endpapers, 253 pages. Minor edge wear, black felt pen spot to bottom of textblock edge.
