A propos de cet article

Description :

364pp plus index. Scarce first edition from 1945 and assumed first printing due to the absence of any notation to the contrary. Second state, price-clipped dust jacket in mylar protective sheet is near fine with small tear at top edge and 1/4" chip at bottom back side of spine. Blue boards with bright gilt lettering on front and spine. Pages unmarked and clean with slight toning on end papers.

The author had a long acquaintance with many of Muir's friends plus his two daughters. With such access to stories and documents, this is recognized as the first comprehensive biography that gives a complete picture of the man, his mind, and his work. Illustrated with many black & white photos, Muir drawings, a page from his 1,000 mile walk journal, and a fold-out replica of a letter to Jeanne Carr dated Sep 27th 1874, that Muir wrote while in Yosemite Valley. The letter was later named the "Grasshopper Letter" because of this passage: "I chased a grasshopper & finally wearied the lovely fellow & made him attempt to fly over the river into wh(ich) he fell & I ran out & captured him before any of the trouts.".
