Binding tight and square, text clean, bright, and unmarked. 1865 Hard Cover. viii, 11-226 pp. Brown cloth, titles in relief against gilt panel on spine, blind-stamped device and borders on boards, engraved frontispiece portrait of Derby, who was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1861, and promoted to first lieutenant the same year. He earned the rank of captain just a month before being killed in action in September 1862. The 15th Massachusetts Infantry, which included the First Company Andrew Sharpshooters, carried 24 officers and 582 enlisted men into action on the morning of September 17, 1862 at the Battle Of Antietam. A considerable number of these men were new recruits from Worcester County, having joined up with the regiment just 12 days earlier on September 5th near Rockville, Maryland. The 15th Massachusetts was a part of Brigadier General Willis A. Gorman's Brigade, General Sedgewick's Division of the Second Army Corps, Army of The Potomac. Only three infantry regiments lost more in killed and mortally wounded in a single engagement during the whole war. From six hundred and six officers and men, including the First Company Andrew Sharpshooters - who were attached to the 15th Mass during the battle - three hundred and twenty four, over fifty-two percent were reported as killed or wounded and twenty-four were missing.
