A French physician who practiced in Santo Domingo, Pascalis was forced to flee the slave insurrection in 1793. For a time he lived in Philadelphia and was a follower of Benjamin Rush, but in 1810 he moved to New York and became associated with Samuel L. Mitchill. His experience in the West Indies qualified him to write two books on yellow fever. He later became absorbed with the dangers of urban burials, the subject of this book, which attributes summer and fall malignant fevers to infection of the atmosphere by animal decomposition.
