Item description from seller

Laminated illustrated wrappers, small 4to, 104, [2] pp, ills. 222 entries. From the introduction - "This exhibition tries to show through books and manuscripts not only what Scotland has given to the civilization of the world, but what it has received from it. The visitor will see how the balance of this account has varied through the years. In the Middle Ages and in early modem times, Scotland owed a deep intellectual and cultural debt to foreign countries, particularly France, and many of the medieval manuscripts and early printed books on display, though preserved and treasured in this country, have come from abroad. Likewise, the beginnings of printing in Scotland are little more than an off- shoot of earlier developments in France. In the 17th century, beginning perhaps with Napier's discovery of logarithms, Scotland starts to repay its debts, and by the end of the 18th century the Scottish contribution to philosophy, history, literature, architecture and science is far greater than could have been expected from so small a country. Since then Scotland has remained a cultural centre of European significance, sometimes for largely romantic reasons, sometimes for more practical qualities, but never has it been a place to overlook. 'The Eye of the Mind: the Scot and his Books' shows something of this cultural and intellectual development, and of the heritage of books and learning preserved or created in this country. It consists principally of material from the collections of the National Library, but much has been borrowed from private owners and from other public or institutional libraries. That there still are so many important libraries in Scotland is a further indication of the respect accorded in this country to the written word both now and in the past.". Booklabel of the bibliophile A R A Hobson on front front inside wrapper and laid in are a short note in his hand of a painting and three "information sheets" more or less related to the exhibition. Very Good.
