A propos de cet article
A museum edition of the ‘Royaalbijbel’, a privately compiled illustrated Bible, renowned for its large engravings measuring about 460 x 510 mm. (22) 468, (13) 167, (2) 77 folia. Contemporary blind-stamped Leather with 7 raised bands, 2 silver clasps, 8 silver corner-pieces and two silver medallions, bearing the year and the family coat of arms. Large Folio, H. 50 x L. 32 x W. 19 cm. The first edition of the Elzevier Bible, containing the Old and New Testament and the Apocrypha. An exceptional and beautiful copy of the only 17th-century States Bible printed in the new Roman typeface. The volume is bound in brown leather with silver clasps, silver corner-pieces and medallions, and decorated with gold embossing on both the covers and the spine, featuring a motif of flowers and tendrils. The Elzevier Bible was the first Dutch Bible that was printed in a Roman font. Interleaved with: 6 folding maps by Nicolaes Visscher; the series of prints by Frederik de Witt, based on works by Cornelis Danckerts and Mattheüs Merian, comprising 6 sets of 16 engravings on 2 folio sheets; 127 double-page-sized engravings from the collection of Claes Jansz. Visscher (1587–1652), his son Nicolaus Visscher I (1618–1679) and his grandson Nicolaus Visscher II (1649–1702). The latter published a catalogue of his collection in 1680, describing 130 large-scale engravings. The engravings from the Visscher collection originate from the Flemish school, mostly based on works by Rubens, Rembrandt, Jordaens, Landerseel, De Vos, De Hondecoutre, Potter and Vinckboons. The Royaal Bible can be regarded as a collection of large-format biblical prints, with or without the biblical text, in book form. Consumers could select the prints themselves and have them bound by a bookbinder, either as separate sheets or bound into a Bible, as is the case with this copy. Owing to the personalised composition and the considerably wide range of ‘Royaal’ prints available, each copy is unique and extremely diverse. Almost every engraving is accompanied by a title in Latin. Provenance: This 1663 Elsevier Bible, bearing the Grovestins coat of arms and silver fittings, dated 1680, remained in the possession of the old Frisian noble family of Grovestins and was subsequently transmitted almost entirely through the female line. It passed from Idzart Oenes Grovestins (1655–1729) and his wife Orsel Burmania to their daughter Orsel Gesina Grovestins (1678–1742). Having died without children, she bequeathed the Bible to her niece Baudina Lucia Aebinga van Humalda (1712–1777), granddaughter of Clara Feyona Grovestins. From the Humalda family, the Bible passed to Clara Tjallinga Aebinga van Humalda (1756–1830) and subsequently to her daughter Baudina Lucia Ebella van Eysinga (1787–1854). As she also died without issue, the Bible was inherited through another female branch of the family, passing to Wiskje van Coehoorn van Scheltinga–Van Sminia (1802–1879) and then to her daughter Baudina Lucia Ebella van Sminia (1844–1891). Despite changing family names through marriage, the volume continued to be preserved as a hereditary Grovestins family heirloom. The Bible is accompanied by its original family documents, donation deeds, and manuscript papers recording the succession of ownership and family history, providing an unusually complete and well-documented provenance.
