Hare Books takes its name from the ex libris of John Ellis Hare (1933, Toronto - 18 April 2005, Ottawa), a Franco-Ontarian author, historian, biographer, bibliographer, and longtime professor at the University of Ottawa. John Hare was one of Canada's foremost scholars of French Canadian history and early Canadian printing. Along with Jean-Pierre Wallot, former National Archivist of Canada, he became one of the first recipients of the Marie Tremaine Medal from the Bibliographical Society of Canada, following Marie Tremaine herself, in recognition of their groundbreaking work on Canadian Imprints, 1801-1840. After a distinguished academic career spanning several decades, Hare was named Professor Emeritus at the University of Ottawa. Hare Books was founded in 2018 after I received an unexpected call from the Hare family while vacationing in Los Cabos, Mexico. They informed me that 86 boxes of books, consisting primarily of Canadiana, were at risk of being discarded. The collection had spent nearly a decade in cold storage at an academic archival repository and was being deaccessioned. While many of the books were rare and historically significant, the institution determined that they lacked sufficient archival value to justify permanent retention. Most of Hare's manuscripts, correspondence, and other archival records had already been separated and preserved by the repository. During his lifetime, John Hare donated many of his most valuable rare books to institutions including Saint Paul University, the University of Toronto, and the Université de Montréal. In the case of Saint Paul University, the library director has described Hare's donations as among the jewels of its rare book collection. These donations included many works dating from 1600 to 1840. The collection I inherited is primarily composed of books published between 1850 and 1950. Although generally more modern than the materials donated to institutional collections, many are still uncommon, signed, inscribed, or uncut copies that formed the research foundation for Hare's publications on French Canadian history, the Canadian book trade, and French Canadian bibliography. Ironically, the annotations, inscriptions, bookmarks, and notes found within these volumes often reveal more about Hare's intellectual life, research interests, and scholarly network than the archival records preserved elsewhere. As a result, the collection represents not only a library of books but also a unique record of one of Canada's leading bibliographical scholars. Over the years, I have donated select volumes from the collection to rare book libraries, archives, and cultural institutions. I also offer some books for sale to help fund the ongoing preservation, storage, cataloguing, and conservation of the rarer portions of the Hare Collection. While many collectors focus on the earliest and most prestigious volumes, the books that remained in Hare's working library often provide remarkable insight into the research methods, reading habits, and intellectual development of a major Canadian scholar.
