INVITATION. A large and most elaborate embossed invitation on card to the Dinner at Guildhall, on Tuesday the 9th November 1841. The Right Honorable John Pirie, Lord Mayor. William Magnay, Esq. Ald. Alexander Rogers, Esq, Sheriffs. It is numbered 328, with wax seal, and signed by W. S. Angell, Chairman. 22.5cm x 28cm. 1841. John Pirie was the son of John Pirie of Dunse, Berwick; a merchant and shipowner. He was Sheriff of London in 1831, Alderman of the ward of Cornhill from 1834, and Lord Mayor in 1841. He was a founding director, and one of the largest financiers, of the South Australian Company, and also a director of the New Zealand Company. Pirie Street in Adelaide, and the city of Port Pirie were named after him.
