He served Louis Philippe in various ministerial posts and was a critic of Napoleon III, after whose fall during the Franco-Prussian War Thiers became president. He negotiated peace with Prussia and his economic policies facilitated France's economic recovery. He was responsible for the suppression of the Commune of Paris (1871).
