A propos de cet article
This journal belongs to Henry Charles Dudley Long, a member of the English gentry. Born in 1839, he was the only son of Henry Lawes Long and Lady Catharine Long (née Walpole), an English author. Henry Long was the maternal grandson of Horatio Walpole, 2nd Earl of Orford, an English politician. This journal contains two handwritten accounts of Long s travels in his young adulthood. The first is a 40 page account of his Tour of France, Switzerland, and Germany from July through September of 1858. Long travels from London, England to Paris, France. Long describes the train journey to Paris, and his activities in town, including where he goes to lunch and church, the weather, and the sights he sees. Many of these sights will be familiar to readers today, including the Hotel de Ville, Arc De Triomphe, Notre Dame, Palais-Royal, and the Hotel le Meurice. From there, Long travels to Geneva, Switzerland. In Geneva, Long visits Lake Geneva, Hotel de l eau de Geneva, and the Hotel Royal, and makes a trip out to Mont Blanc. Long continues on an extensive tour of the Swiss Alps, which he records in detail. Notable stops on this portion of the journey include Lausanne, Chillon Castle, the Hotel Byron in Villeneuve, the Simme Valley (Simmental), Lake Thun, Interlaken, and the mountain Jungfrau. Long then makes his way to Zurich, describing stops and sights in Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Reichenbach, where he views the falls, Lungern, and Lucerne, and visiting Lake Zurich. Long visits the Falls of Schaffhausen on his way into Germany, where he travels through Baden-Wuttenberg on his way to Cologne. He stops in Heidelberg and at Lauffen Castle, among other places. From Cologne, he continues on through Belgium on his way to return to England. Long is accompanied by Charles E. Long, likely his cousin and an English antiquarian, who financed the trip. The second account is 20 pages long and entitled "Rough Notes of a Cruise to Iceland in R. Y. S. yacht Osprey owner J. B. Petre Esq." by Henry C. D. Long and John C. Thyme, 1861. This account begins with a one page timeline, and then starts off in a daily log format and becomes increasingly detailed. Long and Thyme as they take the train from London to Yarmouth, and then sail North along England s eastern shore, starting on May 30th, making frequent stops in England and Scotland. On July 12th, they sail from Scotland to the Faroe islands, and then on July 18th, they sail to Iceland. The diary describes the sights of Iceland, including the weather, birds, and geysers. The account concludes on July 31st, two weeks before they will begin their return journey. Overall very good condition, some edgewear and wear to spine. One page has a 1" x 2" square missing. Penmanship varies across the text, several pages appear to be written in pencil and then traced over in pen, making it more difficult to read. The ink is faded in places, particularly in the Iceland section, there is slight ink corrosion resulting in smudged letters and light staining. Approximately ? of the pages are unmarked.
