A propos de cet article
[France]: Dec. 21st, 1900 - 1901. 23.2x18cm: 158pp. (of which 138pp. are used). Student manuscript science notebook in French, partially written in Duployan shorthand. Notes in a beautiful and legible script. Contains over 300 illustrations, mostly in black pen and ink, with 23 in color ink. Brown marbled paper boards over brown cloth spine. Affixed to cover is the title "Physique, Chimie, Arpentage" to the top with "Jules Godard" to the center, all hand written on white paper. Under Jules Godard is another affixed paper with "MEMBRE/de l'Académie Sténographique" printed on it, with "14 ans" handwritten underneath in pen. Two gatherings of different quadrille papers, the second gathering s edge stained red. Moderate shelfwear to edges, with some surface scratches and rubbing to covers. Endpapers and text block lightly foxed and toned. Spine cracked at a few gatherings. Better Than Very Good. Student manuscript notebook in physics, chemistry, and surveying, most likely from secondary school, partially written in shorthand and extensively and magnificently illustrated in pen and ink. The first sections include notes on physics and chemistry beginning with Newton and Archimedes-the properties of matter quickly yielding to pneumatic and hydraulics crowned with a mighty impressive full-page transverse section drawing of a steam locomotive. Nearly every page is peppered with meticulous illustrations, each labeled with a figure number and referred to in the notes. Many show scientific apparatus and the physical manifestations of the laws being studied (such as the reanimation of a dissected frog s legs illustrating galvanism). The next section encompassing magnetism, electrodynamics, and optics is written in Duployan shorthand (30pp.) covering topics that include technological innovations in telecommunications and optical instruments. While the scientist's names, figure descriptions, and headings are still in French, all notes are written in a splendid display of shorthand. The last section establishes the practical applications of surveying, covering the instruments and techniques for executing survey work (including a wonderful illustration of a graphometer!). This includes the visual elements used to indicate topography and structures in drafting plans, which the student has represented in two pages of color examples that are simply exquisite. At the end of this section there are 19 pages of math questions on surface area and volume including the student's neatly organized work, solutions, and more hand drawn illustrations. An extremely tidy and organized notebook with impressive science illustrations, and rare shorthand notation! The student is identified on the cover as Jules Godard, a remarkable fourteen-year-old (we presume), who used their shorthand skills to take notes in their science class. From the "MEMBRE/ de l'Académie Sténographique" marking on the front cover, we assume that Jules learned Duployan shorthand by reading Émile Duployé s book Méthode de Sténographie Duployé, a written course and methodology of his shorthand style. After completing the course, Duployé offers to accredit aspiring stenographers by mailing in a 200-250 word sample of their choosing, in both shorthand and French, with a signature ensuring no aid was given in the completion of the task. Once reviewed and deemed sufficient, a diploma and membership card were sent out making one a certified member.
