Item description from seller

Original black-and-white photo postcard. Postmarked in Cheltenham, England. No date, circa 1910s-1920s. 3 1/2" x 5 1/2." Title printed at the bottom of the image. A green, half-penny stamp showing King Edward VII is tipped in on the back. Postcard is used. Postcard is clean and intact overall but has some surface chipping at the edges of the image and slight age toning on back. A Very Good copy. This postcard shows a portrait of Phyllis Dare, an English actress and singer. She was well-known for her stage performances in Edwardian musical comedy. She also appeared in several movies such as Dr. Wake's Patient (1916), The Common Law (1923), Crime on the Hill (1933), and Debt of Honour (1936). There is handwriting on the back in black ink, a brief note addressed to someone living in Somerset, England. Publisher's information on back: "Tuck's Post Card; Raphael Tuck & Sons' Real Photograph G 916; Celebrities of the Stage; Art Publishers to Their Majesties the King & Queen." In 1866, Raphael Tuck & Sons was founded by Raphael Tuck and his wife, Ernestine, on Union Street (now Brushfield Street) in Bishopgate, London. They began selling pictures, frames, and greeting cards but soon ventured into selling postcards in 1899. Postcards had been gaining popularity at the time and were most popular during the late 1800s-early 1900s. The company received its first Royal Warrant of Appointment from Queen Victoria in 1893 which is signified by the notation, "Art Publishers to Her Majesty the Queen," and the like printed on Tuck's products. Other monarchs also granted Raphael Tuck & Sons this warrant later on. The business was then passed down to Raphael's sons, Adolph, Gustave, and Herman, and then to Adolph's own sons, Reginald and Desmond. Unfortunately, the company headquarters, Raphael House, and thousands of records and original source material were destroyed in 1940 during the Blitz. After World War II, Raphael Tuck & Sons managed to start over from scratch and many of its employees came back. The company enjoyed new success over the subsequent years. Raphael Tuck & Sons closed in 1959 upon the retirement of Desmond Tuck, and it was sold to the British Printing Corporation.
