ROSENBLOOM."] [Image on the right: Photograph of a clean-shaven young man labeled "ALEX. ROSENBLOOM."] The undersigned hereby offers a Reward of Two Hundred and Fifty Dollars ($250.00) for the arrest of Alexander Rosenbloom, wanted for Conspiracy in connection with the disappearance of his father, S. J. Rosenbloom. He is described as follows: Aged 18 years, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, weight about 150 pounds, black hair, fair complexion, heavy eyebrows, well built, talks but little, has been employed as a draughtsman. Left Windber Monday evening, November 24th.The same reward will also be given for information that will lead to the finding of S. J. Rosenbloom, who suddenly and mysteriously disappeared from his home in Windber, Pa., on Monday evening, November 11th, 1907. He is described as follows: Aged 62 years, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, weight about 135 to 140 pounds, gray moustache and chin beard, slightly stooped and limps slightly in his walk, caused from bunions on his foot. A Hebrew by nationality. Address the undersigned at Windber, Somerset County, Pa. WM. ROSENBLOOM, LOUIS ROSENBLOOM." The 1907 disappearance of Windber clothing merchant Solomon J. Rosenbloom developed into a major national true-crime sensation. 9 months later, in August 1908 a trunk with his body was found in Camden, New Jersey. Alex Friedman, who had been a clerk at Rosenbloom’s Windber store traveled to Camden and identified the body as S.J. Rosenbloom, noting that the clothing on the corpse originated from the family store and the trunk was like those sold at the store. Body had gunshot wound in the chest. However, Rosenbloom's son-in-law, Louis Weller, disputed the identification. On August 22, 1908, Somerset County District Attorney John S. Miller issued warrants for five individuals. One warrant targeted the 19-year-old son, Alexander Rosenbloom (the murderer), who had fled shortly after his father disappeared and never reappeared. The mother, Bonnie (died 5/5/1920), later said her son admitted to her that he killed his father for being physically abusive towards her and his sister Eva (died 5/12/1974) and quarreled with the entire family. Wife and daughter were later arrested for withholding information about the murder in which they did not participate. They spent months in jail until August 27, 1908 when a family member put up bail for them. An Alex Rosenbloom (died Dec. 25, 1960) is buried in Montefiore Cemetery, Queens, New York. Might it be the son? Last mention of the case in the papers was is in 1934: Case unsolved. Suspect never arrested. The New York Times August 22, 1908 issue: "Identifies Victim of Trunk Mystery; Clerk in His Store Says Body Is S. J. Rosenbloom, Merchant of Windber, Penn. Police Seek His Son."The family's November 1907 reward was for "conspiracy in connection with the disappearance," not murder. After the trunk was found in New Jersey in August 1908, the case became national news. Wife and daughter could not be extradited from NYC to Pennsylvania: NY Governor: no sufficient evidence to justify it. Coverage in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Pittsburgh Press, Chicago Tribune, and other papers in August 1908. Other sources: Altoona Tribune - November 26, 1907 - A Windber Mystery The Central New Jersey Home News - August 17, 1908 - Murder Mystery in Jersey Courier-Post - August 21, 1908 - Victim Practically Identified as Missing Windber Merchant The Philadelphia Inquirer - August 22, 1908 - Trunk Mystery Now Appears to Near Conclusion The Pittsburgh Press - August 23, 1908 - Son of Slain Merchant Has Gone to Camden East Oregonian - August, 24, 1908 - Son Murdered Brutal Father The Saginaw News - August 24, 1908 - Trunk Victim Killed by Son Courier-Post - August 25, 1908 . . .…
