A propos de cet article

Pinellas County land development photo archive, circa 1951 to 1952, documenting the physical conversion of open land into one of Florida's fastest growing postwar suburban landscapes. Photographed by Clearwater photographer George Fulmer and associated with Fulmer & Cole, the archive records not only completed houses but the terrain and infrastructure from which the new residential county was being made. Photographs show vacant acreage, newly improved roads, waterfront parcels, utilities, isolated houses on sparsely settled lots, and residential districts at markedly different stages of development. Pinellas County's population increased from 159,249 in 1950 to 374,665 in 1960, a 135 percent rise that transformed what remained of the peninsula's open land during this era. Photo archive of approximately 136 items, comprising 68 silver gelatin photographs, and 68 corresponding large format negatives. Pinellas County, Florida, circa 1951 to 1952. The photographs move repeatedly between undeveloped ground and the structures appearing upon it. Most approximately 4 x 5 inches. Several show freshly paved streets extending through thinly settled areas, with sandy shoulders, utility poles, palmettos, palms, scrub, and vacant parcels occupying much of the frame; another records an unimproved roadside tract identified on its envelope as the site of a proposed new theater. An April 19, 1952 group for A. W. Baylis shows a new house standing almost alone on sandy waterfront property and the adjoining undeveloped shoreline and pier. Other views document residential construction at Indian Rocks Road, new houses on Woodlawn, Magnolia, Bay Esplanade, Palmetto, Osceola, Mohawk, Glenwood North, and other named streets and subdivisions, ranging from modest single story dwellings with carports to larger ranch houses, apartment buildings, and established estates. The built environment appears at different points in its occupation: some houses stand amid bare sand and newly planted shrubs; others have lawns, palms, driveways, screened rooms, garages, and mature landscaping. Interior photographs record furnished living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, and Florida rooms, while a Lakeside Trailer Court series shows residents inside a compact trailer dwelling and seated outdoors beside the development. Municipal and civic subjects extend the record beyond private property, including newly opened roads, Clearwater tennis courts, and the Belleair Estates water pump system, where a technician works at the equipment and a woman sits at an office desk. Several prints bear the ink stamp "Fulmer & Cole, Inc., 24 So. Garden Ave., Clearwater, Florida," directly identifying the commercial photographic operation behind part of the material. This collection shows the decisive stage in the remaking of Pinellas County, when postwar population migration, automobile ownership, federal mortgage policy, road construction, and the expansion of municipal services accelerated development across the peninsula. FHA insured mortgages and Veterans Administration loan guarantees lowered the cost of homeownership for millions of postwar buyers and supported the national market for newly constructed single family housing, while Florida's climate and rapidly expanding highway network drew migrants and retirees into metropolitan areas along both coasts. The empty roads and sandy lots are not incidental backgrounds to the houses, instead they show the land which was still available for conversion, and the speed with which a suburban landscape was being imposed upon it. Light surface wear and occasional handling marks to photographs and envelopes. Overall in very good condition. A photographic record of the land, infrastructure, housing, and domestic spaces through which postwar Pinellas County was converted from a partially undeveloped Florida peninsula into a densely settled Sunbelt suburb.…
