A propos de cet article

A small collection of real photo postcards documenting the construction of the Canyon (or Big Meadows) Dam on the North Fork Feather River in Plumas County, California. The dam, a project of the Great Western Power Company, was built between 1912 and 1914 to provide hydroelectric power and water to the Sacramento Valley. The project flooded the Big Meadows valley, creating Lake Almanor and displacing Indigenous Maidu residents of the valley along with parts of the town of Prattville. The postcards are captioned on the verso, with some captioned on the negative as well. The photographer, R.C. Gibbs, was a pile driver operator; two shots show massive pile drivers and have captions pointing out on which level of the driver Gibbs was standing. Other shots include a view of the workers' camp, one of the meadows opening out from the river early on in the project, a view of the construction taken from above, and a Speedwell truck hauling supplies through Keddie, California. The latter has an unsent note to a friend, connecting Gibbs to a network of laborers in California: "Friend Happy, Rec'd your card a day or two ago. Very glad to hear you landed something in Butte also Morgan. Have not heard from Greaves nor Kennedy since June 7th. They both had a job promised at Immigrant [Emigrant] Gap. Had a letter from both Mrs's Lord & Tyler. Mrs. L. is in Frisco. Sharkey is in Alameda. Regards to Mike D. + yourself. R.C. Gibbs. P.S. The dry dock has started up again. The goverment was going to take the job away from the Dredging Co. if they did not do something, so Mrs. Tyler Wrote." (June 25, 1913) Of interest to historians of early California water infrastructure. Six real photo postcards measuring 3 ½ x 5 ½ inches.…
