Synopsis

This search-and-rescue patrol pushed far too deep into enemy country is a losing game and they all know it. But, in the confusion, misery and horror of the Vietnam war, now they have one chance to do something grand and they will not give it up. Artillery scout Waldo Daugherty and a war-battered half-company of infantrymen shove through jungle in search of the wreckage of a downed chopper to pull out survivors. If there are any. Haul them to safety. If they can. Out of jungle too far from any help. Because they must.

Each soldier slogs through dripping jungle wrapped in his own bizarre fantasy that he desperately hopes means survival in this place of death and terror. Sergeant Mars speaks to helicopters. Captain Daddy thinks himself a soldier when he is just a village parson. Peepsite believes he can survive combat if he dreams himself away from it. The Bee escapes suicide and believes that proves he will live forever. Waldo thinks every life lost in the company is his personal failure as an artilleryman and he refuses to die too soon. Sometimes guns are not enough to keep a soldier alive in combat. Sometimes it takes a desperate dream.
