Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics - English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, RWTH Aachen University (Institut für Anglistik I), course: Hauptseminar 'American Drama', language: English, abstract: Tennessee Williams, born Thomas Lanier Williams, is not only known for being a 'talented, perceptive and influential American playwright' (Day 1987, vii), but also for his frequent use of symbols. 'A Streetcar Named Desire' (1947), the work which will be dealt with in this paper, is a good example for of usage, since it contains a lot of different kinds of symbolism, for example concerning colours, names, music and many more.Numerous works will be found, if anyone searches for essays about symbolism in Williams' works. Moreover, it is common knowledge that Streetcar is a play which deals not only superficially with a woman going insane, but a play which 'bring[s] into violent contrast a neurotic woman's dream world and the animalistic realism of her brother-in-law' (back of the book in the Diesterweg edition). But since there does not seem to be any work which deals with the question of how exactly Williams drew this contrast by use of symbolism, it will be my aim in this paper to analyse this question. Consequently, I will try to point out the main symbols with which Williams underlined the contrast between realism and illusion, especially considering names, colours, clothes, light, music and certain rituals of the main characters. In the second part of this paper, I will deal with the question to what degree the main characters Stanley and Blanche are strictly opposed to each other or may have something in common. I will also deal with the meaning of the ending concerning realism and illusion. Therefore, what will be discussed are the most striking antinomies and similes in the main characters' attitudes. A general conclusion about the topic of symbolism in Tennessee Williams' Streetcar will be given in the end.To introduce the reader to the topic and also to justify my choice of symbols, a definition of the notion of symbolism will be given right at the beginning of this paper. This will be done by including different approaches, so that a broader definition can be given. Furthermore, for this paper is based on symbolism in Streetcar by Tennessee Williams, it may also be very interesting for the reader to have a look at Williams' attitude towards symbols which will be done at the end of the second chapter. One last point to mention in this introduction is that due to space restrictions not all symbols concerning the topic of illusion and realism can be discussed in this paper. Nevertheless, it is my aim to present the most striking ones.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -Essay from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,4, University of St Andrews, language: English, abstract: In the course of this essay the two books, How to be an alien by George Mikes and Empire of the Mind by Iqbal Ahmed, shall be carefully examined by placing an emphasis on how the sense of the British identity has changed since the end of the British Empire. The primary focus lies on the imperial and industrial decline, thus, due to the scope of this essay, other core issues that co-form the British identity, such as multiculturalism will not be considered. Mikes¿ depictions are based on the English society of the beginning of the twentieth century, a time that was directly influenced by the decline of the empire. Ahmed¿s experiences, on the other hand, are of a much more recent nature. This essay, therefore, presents the link between Britain losing its empire and the modern Britain of today.Firstly, the effects of the end of the empire will be examined by presenting two opposing post-war theories, which will then be applied to Mikes¿ How to be an alien. In order to picture the impact of the end of the empire, the role of cricket shall be investigated as well as the shift in social structures. Furthermore, the industrial decline, as a ¿fellow traveller¿ of the imperial decline, is analysed by means of Ahmed¿s Empire of the mind. The last part of this essay is dedicated to tracing the remnants of the empire on the basis of Ahmed¿s journey.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch.

Wozniak Boyle in her book : ¿Conditional Leadership ¿ the European Commission and European Regional Policy¿.I will assess the development to regional policy using evidence relating to three countries studied in class :Belgium, because it was one of the founding member states of Europe, then Greece because this country became member state in 1981 and was, before 2004 and still is one of the main beneficiary of the funds for regional development and then Slovenia because this state was one of the 10 new member states of the 2004 enlargement which moved deeply the European Regional Policy.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 12 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2, University of Education Ludwigsburg, language: English, abstract: One of the most basic and insightful bonds women form with each other is that of a mother and daughter. The different stages that a mother and her daughter are going through during their lives and the insuperable unity they have is a fact that people have been reflecting about at all times. The impact that a mother has on her daughter is huge no matter how distinct their relationship is. Passing on values, protecting the child and showing unconditional love are some of the main tasks of being a mother. But what if the mother fails to complete these tasks Jamaica Kincaid grew up in Antigua and was raised by a father who was never there and a mother who gave all her attention to her brothers. She fled the island at the age of seventeen, left her family as well as her name behind and entered North America as Jamaica Kincaid. Even though she came to terms with the past, she copes with her experiences through writing books. Kincaid's tight, lyrical prose guides the reader through memories of her mother and her childhood. Due to her lifestory, Jamaica Kincaid manages to portray her fiction in an extremely pure and touching way. In the following, I will take a closer look at her biography and origin. I will also analize two of her novels, Autobiography of my mother and Annie John and interpret them in regard to the mother theme.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 2, University of Münster, language: English, abstract: Ecocriticism is still on its academic margins. Nevertheless, depending on the text onedeals with, nature plays a vital role in understanding and analyzing literature.1 Thepresent essay focuses on the views of nature in the short story ¿The De Wets come toKloof Grange¿ by Doris Lessing.2The Dictionary defines nature as ¿everything that exists in the worldindependently of people, such as plants and animals, earth and rocks, and the weather¿3.Yet, in order to analyze nature in its literary context, it is important to point out thatculture has a great impact on nature and its understanding.4 To analyze the view ofnature, it is vital to recognize that the nature-culture distinction is not always absoluteand clear cut.5 There is nature, and culture, and states partaking in both. Barryintroduces the ¿outdoor environment [¿] [as a] series of adjoining and overlappingareas which move gradually form nature to culture¿6. To answer the question hownature is displayed within the story and hence to be able to draw a conclusion fromthese particular views of nature, different areas will be used to classify nature in itscultural context. Taking Barry¿s classification7 into account, the view of nature in thestory ¿The De Wets come to Kloof Grange¿8 will in the following be associated withthree distinctive areas. Area one is referred to as the scenic sublime. It includes, forinstance, forests, mountains and rivers. Moreover, there is area two, the countrysidewhich implies hills, fields, woods, etc. The greatest impact of culture can be found inarea three, the domestic picturesque. It describes such things as parks and gardens.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu.

Neuware -Script from the year 2010 in the subject Law - Comparative Legal Systems, Comparative Law, grade: keine, University of Hamburg, course: Private Banking für Bachelor (6. Semester), language: English, abstract: Consumer Credit Protection Laws in the U.S. and in GermanyAmerican consumers¿indebtedness per capita is close to three times the German amount per capita. Predatory i. e. deceptive, abusive and unfair practices play a significantly more severe role in the U.S. than in Germany. The American law is designed to tackle social problems where they occur. As the old one, the new German Consumer Credit Law is by far less targeted and still lacks an effective enforcement. The German individual borrowing consumer in trouble is largely left alone. As a contrast, administrative enforcement and class actions are forceful weapons to protect and enforce the rights of the American consumer. The presentation explains and compares briefly the different approaches to consumer credit protection in the U.S. on federal level, in California as a prominent single state, and in Germany. The generically identical tool kit for consumer credit protection is employed very differently.Having become more and more realistic over the last four decades, the American law-makers and the authorities in charge of consumer credit protection reduced consumer information in favour of substantial provisions and effective administrative activities to briefly inform, warn, protect and, if appropriate, effectively support the weakest and the most endangered ones amongst the borrowing consumers.According to the EU¿s guidelines, the borrowing European consumer may experience an information overkill, starting summer 2010 when the new law will become effective. From the frustrating experiences with the first version of the Truth in Lending Act (1968) the American law-makers have concluded in 1980 that increasing the number and complexity of information is less helpful than providing for targeted and sanctioning substantive consumer protections. Will it take the EU and Germany also another 12 years to cut the flood of information which will confuse too many European consumers who want or even need to borrow money The upcoming information overflow may also be attributed to the EU¿s aim to harmonize the EU financial market through standardized sets of consumer information. 36 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - Region: Near East, Near Orient, grade: 5 (CH), University of Bern (Insitut für Politikwissenschaft), course: Deliberative Democracy, language: English, abstract: The victory of the conservative AKP (Justice and Development Party) in November, 2002 elections has brought the issue of turban1 back on the agenda, so much so that the tension between Islamists and Kemalists has again increased. This controversial debate has divided the Turkish society into different camps. Secularists claim that the turban is a political symbol and has nothing to do with basic individual rights. Islamists, on the other hand, treat it mainly as an issue of religious freedom. The basic goal of this paper is to answer the question of whether deliberative democracy can contribute to creating a healthy dialogue between Islamists and Kemalists in Turkey. Special emphasis has been given to deliberative concepts such as social learning and mutual understanding, because they may enhance the possibility that an adequate atmosphere of dialogue can be created.First, the theoretical framework will be discussed: After handling the general considerations of deliberative democracy, a more specific model of John Dryzek will be dealt with which analyses the decision making and social learning levels of deliberation separately. Then, Seyla Benhabibs work ¿Claims of Culture¿ (2002) will be examined. Benhabib focuses on the less restricted, informal phases of deliberation in her book. By focusing on Dryzek and Benhabib, this paper aims to establish an analytical framework that shows deliberation as an opinion formation process oriented to learning alongside the decision making process. The third chapter focuses on the headscarf debate in Turkey by considering its historical roots and legal framework. In the fourth chapter, a survey conducted in 2007 by the Konda Research Institute regarding the perceptions and practices of people in Turkey regarding religion, the headscarf and secularism will be presented. Next, some of the findings of the ¿Q survey¿ conducted by Bora Kanra will be discussed. It will be argued that the findings of these two studies will bolster the hopes for establishing a more healthy democratic culture in Turkey.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 36 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, University of Göttingen, course: Fragile States: Determinanten, Auswirkungen und mögliche Wege aus der Krise, language: English, abstract: What should we learn from our history of development aid Development aid faces fundamental problems, especially in fragile states. These problems were addressed regularly by various representatives, academics, politicians and practitioners. The Samaritan Dilemma and a case study on used clothing is presented. It is clear that only having good intentions is not enough to help out the poor. The econometric analysis on aid effectiveness has repeatedly offered hope and repeatedly disappointed. There are several reasons why the aid flow increases anyway. Chauvet and Collier (2004) use a different approach and show potential for efficiency enhancements, but their analysis suffers from several caveats. Nevertheless, potential is shown and the authors indicate how to address the problem. Furthermore, the idea of social businesses is introduced as a market based mechanism which allows for feedback and accountability.Recent initiatives, primarily pushed by private actors, give reason for hope. It is on the governments to provide the basic conditions in the fragile states and to back those initiatives which so far show the best results.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 40 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Ethnology / Cultural Anthropology, grade: 1,3, University of Heidelberg (Institut für Ethnologie), course: Sorcery and Witchcraft in South Asia: Theories and Practices of the Occult, language: English, abstract: To most people growing up in a Western cultural setting, magic, sorcery and witchcraft hold a certain fascination. There always seems to be something mysterious, extraordinary, even risky to the named issues, probably because we just don¿t face them in everyday life.Anthropology shares this fascination for the following reasons: ¿cross-cultural prevalence, frequent cultural prominence, paradoxical attributes, no doubt the attraction of the exotic, and the potential for testing theories about belief and social action¿ (Levine 1982: 259). In this paper, I will focus mainly on the subject of witchcraft without disregarding important links to magic and sorcery. Central questions are: What is witchcraft Under what circumstances does witchcraft appear Why do people accuse others of it or confess to witchcraft themselves How does witchcraft relate to the social structure, economics, politics and personal affairs of the members of a society There have been different answers to those questions since the first papers on magic, sorcery, and witchcraft have been written in the late 19th and early 20th century. In chapter 2, I will therefore present a historical overview of the most important approaches in general which are also especially important for this study. Theories by Frazer, Tylor, Malinowski, Evans- Pritchard and Douglas will be sketched out. Beforehand I will try to discern the concepts of magic, witchcraft and sorcery in chapter 1 and name their most important aspects. This differ-entiation is important to do, since the meanings of the named terms have changed over the decades and there is still a bit of disaccord or confusion in the use and understanding of them today. In chapter 3, I will give a résumé of the monography 'The Witch-Hunt; or: a Triumph of Morality' by F.G. Bailey which is based on his fieldwork in an Indian village in 1953. He uses several anthropological approaches to explain and interpret the exceptional events that have taken place, drawing on functional, structural and psychological theories. Also in chapter 3, I will point out how Bailey provides empiric examples for theories stated by great anthropolo- gists over the decades. Lastly, I will draw a conclusion and try to answer the questions I posed above.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,7, Berlin School of Economics and Law (Institute of Management), course: International Finance, language: English, abstract: Geneva, 24 June 2009 -- Global foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows and cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&As) - the main mode of FDI - drastically declined in the last quarter of 2008, and the fall has continued into 2009, UNCTAD data reveal. FDI inflows dropped by 54% and M&As by 77% during the first quarter of 2009 as compared to the same period last year.Prospects for FDI will remain gloomy for the rest of the year, UNCTAD economists say (UNCTAD, 2009).Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is defined by the IMF as an international investment of one company with the intention of lasting relationship. This investment has to exceed 10% of equity of the target company. Also an ambition of the management for influence should be visible. This makes the difference to aportfolio investment (IMF, 1993).The following list summarizes major requirements: Transfer of capital Control investment A source of funds for foreign operations A balance of payments flowBefore the financial crisis hit the world economy, FDI was one of the major drivers of globalization and continuously increasing with high growth rates. FDI flows over a long period of time even increased faster than world GDP growth. But as reported from the UNCTAD World Investment Report 2009 85% of Transnational Corporations (TNC)3 worldwide are negatively affected by thefinancial crisis with respective negative impacts on their investment decisions. This shortfall has also consequences to the landscape of FDI. The USA are still number one in FDI flows but a lot of emerging countries have risen in the list of top FDI inflows. This is another hint for the changes in the world. The emerging markets will more and more take over a leading position in world economics and also a stabilizing function. They will also head the recovery in FDI flow which is expected to take place in 2010.This paper will primarily deal with the TNC and their decision for FDI. Starting with the motivations, the following process and evaluation criteria, also associated risks have to be taken into account. For a complete picture including the environment a short look at the host country and the effects of FDI will be done atthe end (the decision of the TNC is always connected with espective influences from outside). Finally, all major considerations of a TNC in combination with FDI should be described.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,5, University of Cologne (Englisches Seminar), course: The Acquisition of English, language: English, abstract: Encounters with feral children have been attracting intellectual examination and curiosity since the early seventeenth century. Among others, Anthropologists, Psychologists and Linguists hoped to find answers to central questions of mankind: What makes us human beings What distinguishes us from animals Nature or nurture, what has greater impact on us In linguistics these case studies are frequently cited. Especially with respect to the assumption of maturational constraints on language acquisition, scholars tried to draw conclusions from the success or failure feral children exhibited after discovery. Respectively, they were interpreted as evidence or counter-evidence for the Critical Period Hypothesis (CPH) which postulates that language can only be acquired normally up to a certain age. This term paper is organised as follows. In Section 2 a general de-scription of critical periods is given before turning to Lenneberg¿s hypothesis. Section 3 focuses on two cases that are often taken as evidence for the CPH, namely Victor and Genie. Both didn¿t master language acquisition to a satisfactory level. Section 4, on the other hand, deals with three children who are expounded as counter-evidence for the CPH because they caught up quickly on language learning close to age seven. In both sections, after a short description of the individual experiences prior to dis-covery, a detailed account of linguistic achievements and shortcomings is presented. Section 5 will discuss the outcomes and put them into a broader scientific context by adding results of further research. Section 6 offers a preliminary conclusion, namely that cases of feral children should be included as indirect evidence but that this needs to be done carefully.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 32 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, TU Dortmund (Institut für Anglistik), course: Transatlantic Slavery, language: English, abstract: Although the people from Africa already new slavery on the African continent, they experienced totally new insights into slavery when arriving in the New World in the 19th century. Henceforward, a new era of dehumanization, depersonalization, brutal and dreadful mistreatments of Afro-Americans took place, which still in these days influence the history of the United States.Harriet Ann Jacobs¿ Incidents in a Life of a Slave Girl (1861) and Frederick Douglass¿ Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (1845) are two autobiographical slave narratives which show on a very impressive, personal and emotional level the repercussions, the atrocities and effects of slavery on the individual slave as well as on the slaveholders. However, it can be read that under an economy of slavery, both male and female slaves are feminized or ¿ungenered¿ and that the denial of subject status is linked to the exclusion of slaves from participation in the gender system that structured the dominant society (cf. Boesenberg 1999: 119). In this paper it will be analyzed and discussed in how far these gender-defining statements made by Boesenberg in particular can mislead the reader. Actually, a lot of gender-bound experiences of slaves will be pointed out in this paper which illuminate that the individual slave acts and lives accordingly to his or her gender. The aim of this paper is to emphasize differences of gender-bound experiences between Douglass¿ and Jacobs¿ narratives. Firstly, a depiction of slavery will help the reader to empathetically imagine the conditions of the situation in which the slaves and the slaveholders lived together. In a second part the influences of slavery on the social environment will be analyzed while focus will be given on the one hand to the slave families and on the other hand to the slaveholders. In a third part punishment and abuse, which are split into physical and psychological abuses, will be discussed. In the end the conclusion sums up the results from the previous chapters and analyzes the view on gender in a slavery-controlled society mentioned in Boesenberg¿s as well as in Matterson¿s essay.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Lüneburg (Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: History of English and English historical linguistics, language: English, abstract: English is the language of commerce and tourism, of international politics, of science, the official language of international and multinational companies and industries, the language of air traffic control, of international news agencies, of mass entertainment, of computers and of the Internet. It is assumed that about a quarter of the world`s population is already fluent or competent in English (that means around 1,5 billion people) and that there is a total of 75 territories where English has a special place in society. These regions can be divided according to the status they give English: Either they have English as a native language, as a second or official language or as a foreign language. This classification is visualized by the so-called Three-circle-model: The inner circle compromises those countries where English is the primary language of communication and is learnt as a native language by the majority of the population. It includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The outer or extended circle represents the countries where English plays an important role in a non-native setting. In many cases these are former British colonies where the English language is part of the countries leading institutions and of various other domains. This circle includes India, Malawi, Singapore and 50 other territories. The expanding circle involves those countries in which English is learnt as a lingua franca by many people. These countries neither have a history of colonization nor have they given English any administrative status. Such countries are Germany, Japan, Israel and a growing number of other states.Fennel (2004) divides the global spreading of English that has lead to its status as a world language into four phases:I. British colonialism from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuryII. British leadership in the Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuriesIII. American economic superiority and political leadershipIV. American technological dominationIn what follows we will focus on the first phase: The colonial expansion of English, which also marks the beginning of the Modern English period. The main idea of this term paper is to introduce the most popular varieties of English around the world and to familiarize with the historical facts and development of these countries emphasizing on the specific linguistic characteristics.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.

The novel will be analyzed in terms of how it portrays the perpetrators of the Holocaust and which conclusions can be drawn from this specific point of view. The significance of the Holocaust for future generations will also be outlined. The style as well as the content of the novel will be taken into account to analyze how morality is portrayed (2.1. Morality and the ¿Third Reich¿) and what consequences arise from this (2.2. Consequences of ¿Third Reich¿ Morality). In this respect, the role of the reader in relation to the text will be elucidated (2.3. Moral Involvement of the Reader). The method of analyzing content and style of the novel seems crucial to provide an answer to the raised question: ¿Personally, I¿ve always believed in the indivisibility of form and content. [¿] Style is not neutral; it gives moral directions.¿ ¿Style isn¿t something added on; it¿s intrinsic to the perceptions and the way you see life.¿Postmodern theories of history point out that historical objectivity can not be accomplished: ¿[¿] historians inescapably interpret, and thus shape, the history they want to document.¿ Particularly, Hayden White stresses the ¿construct character¿ of historical conclusions. ¿[T]here is an inexpugnable relativity in every representation of historical phenomena.¿ Furthermore, in terms of dealing with and interpreting the Holocaust, one has to be aware of the circumstance that ¿the historical narrativization of the Holocaust raises not only aesthetic problems, but also moral issues¿ . Hence, portraying the Holocaust has untold faces. Apart from the difference between interpretations, the motivation to provide an interpretation differs. (For instance, the purpose of memory might be used to legitimate the existence and form of a state. ) The description of the Holocaust is part of a ¿cultural memory¿. (The term is used here to ¿describe the complex ways of which societies remember their past using a variety of media.¿ )Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Freiburg, course: Hauptseminar The Rise of the Entertainment Industry, language: English, abstract: Throughout their history in the United States, African¿Americans had never been in charge of their own image. When in Kentucky in 1928, Thomas 'Daddy' Rice, a white man who performed in black-face 'Jim Crow', a song that he had heard before in the South from a black performer, a new genre was born: the minstrel show, a white imitation of black culture. In his movie Bamboozled (2000), Spike Lee confronts us with the question, if these racist nineteenth century depictions of African Americans still exist today in contemporary popular media. In this case we have to ask the question of responsibility for these representations: In the 1990s 340 billion dollars had been spent on media and entertainment in the United States. The entertainment industry today has become the fastest increasing factor of economy. Since the 1970s television is the largest and most influential entertainment medium in North America and occupies a crucial space in practices of everyday life, 'where important social encounters and cultural transformations are possible.' The concept of ¿seeing is believing¿ obviously is a major factor here.' A majority of Americans only came to know and understand the American racial order through media representations of the black ethnic other. This research paper will try to give some proof of the historical continuity of the stereotypical racist representations ofAfrican Americans from the days of minstrelsy and vaudeville until today.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,5, University of Göttingen, course: Literature of New Zealand, language: English, abstract: Title: The Concept of the Noble / Ignoble Savage in 20th Century New World Novels:Maurice Shadbolt¿s Season Of The Jew and Michael Blake¿s Dances With WolvesConfrontation of civilized Europeans with foreign ¿primitive¿ peoples has mostly been disatvantageous for the latter. The easiest way to deal with the strangeness of indigenous people was to regard them in a stereotypical way. Stereotypes such as the ¿noble¿ and the ¿ingnoble savage¿ were used to deprive such cultures of their humanity and to justify colonization and genocide. These stereotypes also found their way into European literature. In this work, I will analyze how the authors Maurice Shadbolt and Michael Blake deal with such stereotypes in their novels, Season Of The Jew and Dances With Wolves, respectively. I chose to compare these novels because they have many similarities but on the other hand also enough differences to make them an interesting comparison. Both novels are considered to be historical novels but there are some differences in the dealing with stereotypes, which I consider to be an important aspect of historical novels in general.Firstly, I will draw an outline of the history of the terms ¿noble¿ and ¿ignoble savage¿ and then make a concise definition of the terms. The next step will be a short book portrait of both novels in order to compare them to each other. In the main part of this work I will analyze how the concepts of the ¿noble savage¿ and he ¿ignoble savage¿ are dealt with in both novels. This will be done in consideration of various aspects which before have been presented in the definition of the terms.Exctract from the main text:d) Behaviour And Further CriteriaOne thing which astonished many European travellers was the missing idea of property among indigeous people. Many writers such as Lahontan were of the opinion that the ¿noble savage¿ had no ¿mine¿ and ¿thine¿, an idea which was closely associated with the idea of the utopian Golden Age. This presented indigenous people in a light that made them appear to be content and not greedy. Other people such as Volney and Darwin were of the opinion that because their own European society was based on the idea of property, the missing of exactly this idea among indigenous people was a further proof that they were not ¿civilized¿ and therefore inferior.Although Europeans as well as indigenous people made wars, the difference lay in their motives. \*\*\*END OF EXTRACTBoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 40 pp. Englisch.
