Although it is not the first contrastive grammar of the two languages to be published in Holland, it is undoubtedly the most comprehen sive. In writing A Contrastive Grammar of English and Dutch (henceforth CGED), we have been fortunate in having at our disposal the two most ex haustive descriptions of English and Dutch published to date: A Comprehen sive Grammar of the English Language (CGEL), by Randolph Quirk, Sidney Greenbaum, Geoffrey Leech and Jan Svartvik, which appeared in 1985, and the Algemene Nederlandse Spraakkunst (ANS), by G. Geerts, W. Haeseryn, J. de Rooij and M. e. van den Toorn, published in 1984. Both grammars are based on a traditional descriptive framework; this also holds true for CGED. CGED consists of two parts. Part One ('A Concise English Grammar') pro vides an overview of the main points of English syntax. It introduces students to the concepts and terminology they require in order to be able to compare the syntactic structures of English and Dutch. Part One consists of two chap ters. In Chapter 1 the questions 'What is grammar ' and 'What is contrastive grammar ' are dealt with briefly.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 376 pp. Englisch.

The workshop was a direct extension of the International Symposium on Nonlinearity and Continuity in Pre8tre88ed Concrete, organized by the editor at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada, July 4-6, 1983. The organization of the NATO-ARW on Partial Prestressing was prompted by the need to explain and reduce the wide dirrerences of expert oph:iipn on the subject, which make more difficult the accep tance of partial prestressing by the profession at large. Specifically, the workshop attempted to: - produce a more unified picture of partial presetressing, by con fronting and, where possible, reconciling some conflicting American and European views on this subject; - bring theoretical advances on partial prestressing within the grasp of engineering practice; - provide the required background for developing some guidelines on the use of partial prestressing, in agreement with existing structural concrete standards. The five themes selected for the workshop agenda were: (1) Problems of Partially Prestressed Concrete (PPC). (2) Partially Prestressed Concrete Members: Static Loading. (3) PPC Members: Repeated and Dynamic Loadings. (4) Continuity in Partially Prestressed Concrete. (5) Practice of Partial Prestressing.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 428 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Mental retardation in the United States is currently defined as ' . signif icantly subaverage general intellectual functioning existing concurrently with deficits in adaptive behavior, and manifested during the development period' (Grossman, 1977). Of the estimated six million plus mentally retarded individuals in this country fully 75 to 85% are considered to be 'func tionally' retarded (Edgerton, 1984). That is, they are mildly retarded persons with no evident organic etiology or demonstrable brain pathology. Despite the relatively recent addition of adaptive behavior as a factor in the definition of retardation, 1.0. still remains as the essential diagnostic criterion (Edgerton, 1984: 26). An 1.0. below 70 indicates subaverage functioning. However, even such an 'objective' measure as 1.0. is prob lematic since a variety of data indicate quite clearly that cultural and social factors are at play in decisions about who is to be considered 'retarded' (Edgerton, 1968; Kamin, 1974; Langness, 1982). Thus, it has been known for quite some time that there is a close relationship between socio-economic status and the prevalence of mild mental retardation: higher socio-economic groups have fewer mildly retarded persons than lower groups (Hurley, 1969). Similarly, it is clear that ethnic minorities in the United States - Blacks, Mexican-Americans, American Indians, Puerto Ricans, Hawaiians, and others - are disproportionately represented in the retarded population (Mercer, 1968; Ramey et ai., 1978).Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 232 pp. Englisch.

D. thesis Lexical Phonology, submitted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but it can hardly be called a revised version of the thesis. The theory that I propose here is in many ways radically different from the one that I proposed in the thesis, and there is a great deal of new data and analyses from English and Malayalam. Chapter VI is so new that I haven't even had the time to try it out on my friends. As everyone knows, research is a collective enterprise, even though an individual's name appears on the first page of the book or article. I would think of this book as a joint project involving dozens of people, in which I acted as the project coordinator, collecting suggestions from a wide variety of sources. Four major influences on what the book contains were Morris Halle, Paul Kiparsky, Mark Liberman, and Joan Bresnan. I learned the ropes of doing research on phonology, phonetics, and morphology from them, and almost everything that I discuss in this book owes its shape ultimately to one of them. Among the others who contributed generously to this book are: Jay Keyser, James Harris, Douglas Pulleyblank, Diana Archangeli, Donca Steriade, Elizabeth Selkirk, Francois Dell, Noam Chomsky, Philip Lesourd, Mohammed Guerssel, Michel Kenstovicz, Raj Singh, Will Leben, Joe Perkell, Victor Zue, Paroo Nihalani. Paradoxically, whilst there is a critical need in geology to reduce the overwhelming field information to its essentials, it often re mains in an over-descriptive state. This prudent attitude of geologists is dictated by the nature of the subjects being consi dered, as it is often difficult to derive the significant parame ters from the raw data. It also follows from the way that geolo gical work is carried out. Geologists proceed, as in a police investigation, by trying to reconstruct past conditions and events from an analysis of the features preserved in rocks. In physics all knowledge is based on experiment but in the Earth Sciences experimental evidence is of very limited scope and is difficult to interpret. The geologist's cautious approach in accepting evidence gained by modelling and quantification is sometimes questionable when it is taken too far. It shuts out potentially fruitful lines of advance; for instance when refu sing order of magnitude calculations, it risks being drowned in anthropomorphic speculation. Happily nowadays, many more studies tend to separate and order the significant facts and are carried out with numerical constraints, which although they are approxi mate in nature, limit the range of hypotheses and thus give rise to new models.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 224 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Since its establishment in the 1950s the American Economic Association's Committee on Economic Education has sought to promote improved instruction in economics and to facilitate this objective by stimulating research on the teaching of economics. These efforts are most apparent in the sessions on economic education that the Committee organizes at the Association's annual meetings. At these sessions economists interested in economic education have opportunities to present new ideas on teaching and research and also to report the findings of their research. The record of this activity can be found in the Proceedings of the American Eco nomic Review. The Committee on Economic Education and its members have been actively involved in a variety of other projects. In the early 1960s it organized the National Task Force on Economic Education that spurred the development of economics teaching at the precollege level. This in turn led to the development of a standardized research instrument, a high school test of economic understanding. This was followed later in the 1960s by the preparation of a similar test of understanding college economics. The development of these two instruments greatly facilitated research on the impact of economics instruction, opened the way for application of increasingly sophisticated statistical methods in measuring the impact of economic education, and initiated a steady stream of research papers on a subject that previously had not been explored. 276 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -The problem of ice destruction comes most frequently to our attention in engineering glaciology and ice engineering because it is essential in the solution of many problems in the polar regions of the Earth. Ice destruction (like the destruction of any other material, in principle) is a complex problem at the junction of solid-state physics, continuum mechanics, and materials science. Ice, particularly sea ice, is characterized by known anomalies that can be explained by the simultaneous occurrence of solid, liquid and gaseous phases. Even minor temperature fluctuations cause changes in the relationship of these phases and, as a consequence, change the physico-mechanical properties of ice. New hydraulic engineering tasks, associated with the destruction of such a complex material, demand continuous improvement of methods and techniques. The present authors have brought these together in a form which is convenient for a wide range of users. This book covers only local ice destruction, by means other than icebreakers, requiring comparatively low consumption of power in proportion to the volume and mass of destroyed ice. Problems of natural ice destruction under the influence of solar radiation, tidal, wind and wave factors are not dis cussed. Mechanical and thermal methods were the first of many to be used for ice destruction. Their application has involved a greater num ber of techniques, so the first two chapters are the longest.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 228 pp. Englisch.

There is so much to read aside from that literature printed in the cyrillic al phabet that, not by intention or by design, but by sheer inertia, we tend to forget about it altogether. Of course, we are wrong, and we know it. Today, 'Hydrobiologia' is proud to present a theme volume by one of the active Soviet limnologist groups, ably steered by Nikolai Smirnov. Their target lake, Glubokoe ozero, is one of the better studied waters of the northern hemisphere, and the series of contributions included in this collection of papers aims both at illustrating this point and at making this interesting material widely available in a congress language. I am confident that 'Studies on Lake Glubokoe' will make a significant contribution to a well-merited better penetration of Russian science onto the world market. H. 1. Neuware -The thesis of this essay may be stated quite briefly: Vatican II is a demonstration model of the phenomenological method employed on an international scale. It exemplifies the final developmental stage, postulated by Husserl, of an inter subjective phenomenology which would take its point of departure, not from individual subjectivity, but from transcendental intersubjectivity. Vatican II, accordingly, offers a unique application of a universal transcendental philosophy in the field of religious reflection for the practical purposes of moral and socio cultural renewal. Phenomenology, as a distinctively European development, is relatively un known in America - at least in its pure form. Our contact with this style of 1 intuitive reflection is usually filtered through psychology or sociology. How ever, Edmund Husserl, The Father of Phenomenology, was originally trained in mathematics, and he entered the field of philosophy because he recognized 2 that the theoretical foundations of modern science were disintegrating. He foresaw that, unless this situation were rectified, modern men would eventually slip into an attitude of absolute scepticism, relativism, and pragmatism. After the First World War he saw this theoretical problem mirrored more and more in the social turbulence of Europe, and his thoughts turned to the need for a 3 renewal at all levels of life. In 1937 when Nazism was triumphant in Germany, and Europe on the brink of World War II, he wrote his last major work, The 4 Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Philosophy.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 276 pp. Englisch.

The format of a NATO Institute is ideally suited to in-depth communications between scien tists of diverse backgrounds. Particularly in the field of ion physics and chemistry, where on-going research involves physicists, physical chemists, and organic chemists - who use a variety of experimental and theoretical techniques - it is found that in the relaxed but stimula ting atmosphere of a NATO ASI, each professional group provides unique insights, leading to a better definition and solution of problems relating to the properties of gas phase ions. This book presents chapters based on the lectures presented at the Les Arcs ASI. The participants took the initiative to organize a number of specialized workshops - informal discussion groups which considered questions or problem areas of particular interest. The accounts of these sessions, which are also included in this book, make stimulating reading, and include considerable useful information. This Advanced Study Institute is the fourth in a series of NATO-spon sored institutes devoted to the chemistry and physics of ions in the gas phase. The first, in 1974, in Biarritz, France, focussed on 'Interactions between Ions and Molecules'.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 506 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -'The Theory of Atomic Spectra', surrrrnanzlllg all that was then known about the quantum theory of free atoms; and in 1961, J.S. Griffith published 'The Theory of Transition Metal Ions', in which he combined the ideas in Condon and Shortley's book with those of Bethe, Schlapp, Penney and Van Vleck. All this work, however, was done by physicists, and the results were reported in a way which was more accessable to physicists than to chemists. In the meantime, Carl J. Ballhausen had been studying quantum theory with W. Moffitt at Harvard; and in 1962 (almost simultaneously with Griffith) he published his extremely important book, 'Introduction to Ligand Field Theory'. This influential book was written from the standpoint of a chemist, and it became the standard work from which chemists learned the quantum theory of transition metal complexes. While it treated in detail the group theoretical aspects of crystal field theory, Carl J. Ballhausen's book also emphasized the limitations of the theory. As he pointed out, it is often not sufficient to treat the central metal ion as free (apart from the influence of the charges on the surrounding ligands): - In many cases hybridization of metal and ligand orbitals is significant. Thus, in general. a molecular orbital treatment is needed to describe transition metal complexes. However, much of the group theory developed In connection with crystal field theory can also be used in the molecular orbital treatment.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 612 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -The Fourth International Symposium on Paleolimnology was held in 1985 from 2 -7 September at Lake Ossiach and close to the Austrian village of Ossiach (mentioned in historical records for the first time in 1028). After the opening speeches a performance by a Carinthian folk-dance group gave the participants a taste of the rural atmosphere of Austria's southernmost federal land. 125 paleolimnologists presented and discussed papers during the meetings and many participated About in the pre-congress excursion devoted to the Salzkammergut, and in the post-congress excursion to Neusied lersee. There was a half-day trip during the symposium to Langsee which is well known from the pioneer work carried out by Professor D. G. Frey more than 30 years ago. In addition to methodological papers most of the special fields of paleolimnology were covered. Special attention was given a.o. to geochemistry, pigments and meromictic lakes. The geographical range of the sites investigated was quite wide. In this connection it is regrettable that none of the expected Soviet colleagues was able to attent the symposium. Under the presidency of Professor D. G. Frey the present members of the international organizing committee (Prof. S. R. Brown, Prof. E. S. Deevey, Prof. F. Oldfield and Dr. M. Ralska-Jasiewiczowa) contributed considerably to the success of the symposium. Likewise our thanks goes to those who helped behind the scenes (Mr. M. Bobek, Mr. M. Fusko, Mrs. A. Klenner, Ms. B. Stipanits and Ms. K. Wolter).Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 444 pp. Englisch.

The most general examination of the meaning of the Greek verb 'esti'/'einai'/'on' both in common usage and in the philosophical literature has been presented by Charles H. Kahn, most extensively in his 1973 book The Verb 'Be' in Ancient Greek. These discussions are summarized in Kahn's contribution to this volume. By and large, they show that conceptual schemes by means of which philosophers have recently approached Greek thought have not been very well suited to the way the concept of being was actually used by the ancients. For one thing, being in the sense of existence played a very small role in Greek thinking according to Kahn. Even more importantly, Kahn has argued that Frege and Russell's thesis that verbs for being, such as 'esti', are multiply ambiguous is ill suited for the purpose of appreciating the actual conceptual assumptions of the Greek thinkers. Frege and Russell claimed that a verb like 'is' or'esti' is ambiguous between the 'is' of identity, the 'is' of existence, the copulative 'is', and the generic 'is' (the 'is' of class-inclusion). At least a couple of generations of scholars have relied on this thesis and fre quently criticized sundry ancients for confusing these different senses of 'esti' with each other. 320 pp. Englisch.

The ASI was conducted at Augusta, Georgia, USA, from September 8-18, 1980. Two volumes resulted from this Institute. Volume one consists of chapters from Corballis, Dimond, Spreen, Bakker, Pirozzolo, Aaron, Whitaker and Zangwill. Corballis discusses the evolution of laterality and Dimond presents specialization of hemispheric functions. Neuropsychological assess ment is the theme of Spreen's chapter and neuropsychological aspects of dyslexia is examined by Bakker, Pirozzolo, and Aaron. Whitaker analyzes a rare form of language impairment. The volume closes with a critical review of cerebral dominance by Zangwill. Volume two deals with such topics as hemispheric specialization neuropsychological assessment, neuropsychological aspects of cogni tion, language, and reading, and research implications in neuro psychology. These two volumes will be useful to practicing clinicians, educationists, psychologists, linguists, speech pathologists and audiologists. We sincerely thank NATO Scientific Affairs Division for their financial and moral support. The Institute was successful because of the generous help from the Oregon State University, Medical College of Georgia, and the Augusta Hilton. The Institute would not have been possible without the understanding and contribution of lecturers and participants. 976 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Das Erscheinen der Gesammelten Schriften Franz Rosenzweigs stellt ein Ereignis von besonderem geistigen Rang dar. 1400 pp. Deutsch.
