Ajouter au panierSecond edition (preceded by the first edition of 1685). [8], 159 pp. Text in Latin and German. 1 vols. 8vo. Judicial and theological opinions (in Latin and German) regarding the controversial marriage in 1666 of the castrato and court favorite, Bartolomeo de Sorlisi, with a young Dresden girl, Dorothy Lichtwer. The discovery of the marriage, which had the blessing of Johann Georg II, Elector of Saxony, provoked a cry of outrage in many circles, including the Lutheran theological establishment as well many in the legal community, and Sorlisi soon became the unfortunate victim of much abuse and mockery. Upon his death in 1672, the marriage was adnnulled in 1672, but the firestorm of controversy which erupted did not abate for many years to come. So controversial was the Sorlisi-Lichter marriage, however, that EUNUCHI CONIUGIUM went through a total of nine editions, of which this is the second. Editions followed of 1718, 1730, 1737, and 1759. OCLC locates only four copies in the US of the first (Harvard, Harvard Law, NY Academy of Medicine, and UCLA); of this second edition, only one copy is found in the US (Harvard Law). Gay-Lemonnyer. Bibl. des ouvrages relatifs à l'amour (4. éd.); II, col. 193 Disbound. Title page a little soiled, slightly foxing hear and there, a few leaves dog-eared [8], 159 pp. Text in Latin and German. 1 vols. 8vo Second edition (preceded by the first edition of 1685).
