Luys décrit le "centre médian" (noyau ventro-médial du thalamus), le "corps" (noyau subthalamique), décrit comme la substance grise accessoire des olives supérieures, et "l'olive supérieure". Son nom fut attaché à ces trois structures (éponymes). Luys décrit aussi les connections fibrillaires entre "la substance grise accessoire" et le "corps jaune" (globus pallidus). Par ailleurs, il entrevoit le rôle de ces structures. Jules Bernard Luys (1828-1897), né à Paris, fut l'élève de Robin. Il échoua à l'agrégation mais devint médecin des hôpitaux, chef de service à la Salpêtrière puis à la Charité, et enfin directeur de la maison de santé d'Ivry.
