In spite of this, the investigator in another department of science would not need to envy the mathematician if the laws of mathematics referred to objects of our mere imagination, and not to objects of reality. For it cannot occasion surprise that different persons should arrive at the same logical conclusions when they have already agreed upon the fundamental laws (axioms), as well as the methods by which other laws are to be deduced therefrom." ; slight smudge on edge of textblock, else VG. Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intriguing history of the concept of "ether," a hypothetical medium once thought to permeate all of space. The author explores how the idea of ether arose from the scientific quest to understand the nature of forces, specifically those operating at a distance, such as gravity. The author traces the evolution of the ether concept from Newton's theory of gravitation to the development of the electromagnetic theory by Maxwell and Lorentz. The book then highlights the pivotal shift brought about by Einstein's theory of relativity, which challenged the very existence of ether as a physical entity. The author delves into the profound implications of Einstein's insights on the nature of space and time. He explores how relativity led to a fundamental re-evaluation of the relationship between geometry and experience, questioning the long-held belief that Euclidean geometry was the only accurate description of the universe. The author thoughtfully examines the implications of these ideas for understanding the structure of the universe, both on a local and cosmic scale. Ultimately, the book reveals how the concept of ether has served as a vital, if sometimes elusive, thread in the tapestry of scientific understanding, continually shaping our comprehension of the universe's fundamental nature. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

All text on the rest of the jacket is intact. [Please see my five images of the actual book.] A small bookseller's label on the rear pastedown has left half attached to the dust jacket flap. "My only aim to-day has been to show that the human faculty of visualisation is by no means bound to capitulate to non-Euclidean geometry." (The end of the second address.) As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.
