First published in 1910, the series total more than 100 volumes. The character was created by Edward Stratemeyer, the founder of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, a book-packaging firm. Tom's adventures have been written by various ghostwriters, beginning with Howard Garis. Most of the books are credited to the collective pseudonym "Victor Appleton". The 33 volumes of the second series use the pseudonym Victor Appleton II for the author. For this series, and some of the later series, the main character is "Tom Swift, Jr." New titles have been published as recently as 2007. Most of the various series emphasized Tom's inventions. The books generally describe the effects of science and technology as wholly beneficial, and the role of the inventor in society as admirable and heroic. Translated into many languages, the books have sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. Tom Swift has also been the subject of a board game and a television series. Several famous people, including Steve Wozniak and Isaac Asimov, have cited "Tom Swift" as an inspiration. This G+ quality likely second format book, as per Mattson & Davis, was copyrighted in 1912 and was published by Grosset & Dunlap; it is 7-5/8" tall with 210 numbered pages of text followed by 10 unnumbered pages of ads. This book is square, modestly soiled, free of edge dings with all four corners lightly bumped; the head and heel of the spine are bumped with slight color loss; the bottom edges have a heavy amount of wear but the boards are not exposed. The spine is heavily soiled and not faded; all the lettering and the oval image are intact. The front panel is also soiled but has only a modest amount of wear. The lower corner of the rear board has water damage that makes the very corner flabby--but there is no water damage to any text pages. Also, the front and rear panels have dots of color loss. The interior is free of writing, stray marks, stains of any sort and paper damage of any type. Both hinges are strong and undamaged in any fashion. The text paper is mildly toned and very flexible. The book has no remainder mark and is not a former library book. It has a frontis on coated paper. The list at the rear of the book lists to title #27 in this series.

It has a very slight lean, is very clean, free of edge dings with both front corners very lightly bumped; the head and heel of the spine are very lightly bumped, with no fabric damage. The bottom edges and lower front corners have a small amount of wear. Even with the lean, the exterior looks very good. The interior is completely free of writing, stray marks, stains of any sort and page damage of any type. Both hinges are strong and not damaged. The frontis is intact. The paper is very slightly toned and quite flexible. The book lists 15 Swift titles on the copyright page but 29 titles on the list at the rear of the book. This VG quality duo-tone jacket is very clean and the colors on the front panel are not damaged or faded. It has small chips at all four corners, small edge chips and short tears at the head of the spine and a larger chip at the heel--no lettering is lost. There is also a small chip on the bottom of the front panel that takes a part of the last letter of the author's name. The spine is moderately toned and Tom's image and the title are reasonably clear though the publisher's name is a bit harder to see. There is no tape on this jacket. The front flap lists to title 28 in this series.
