Amenia, New York, January 10, 1956., 1956. Fine. - Over 45 words penned on her 10-1/2 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide "Dawnwood Farms" stationery with a vignette of a calf at top right. Dorothy Long writes to Saltford's Flower Shop, which she misspells "Saltforts", that "enclosed find a card to be sent with a plant." and suggests that they "use your judgement [sp] as to selection and charge to my account". Signed "Dorothy A. Long". The recipient has penciled a check mark across the text and initialed the letter near the top. Near fine. Born Dorothy Cloudman on a farm in Maine, Dorothy A. Long, aka Dorothy Gray (1916-2008) went to work for Elizabeth Arden in New York City. Opening her own salon in 1916 as Dorothy Gray, she expanded her business throughout New York, Atlantic City and San Francisco, opening a cosmetics laboratory in 1922. She traveled through Africa & South America after selling her business and, with her husband George Long. bought a farm in Amenia, New York where she raised purebred Ayrshires and Guernseys.
