Signed limited edition, number 49 of 525 copies signed by the illustrator. Each of the 201 fables begins with an initial illustrated letter. Stephen Gooden (1892-1955) rose to prominence in the 1920s and became the leading exponent of original line engraving. Most of his work was for private presses, including the Nonesuch Press. He also engraved pictorial bookplates, including a number for the Royal Family, and was the official designer to the Bank of England. Large octavo. Engraved title page, 11 engraved plates, pictorial initials. Original vellum, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, device in fourth compartment gilt, fox device on front cover gilt, covers bordered with gilt rules and cornerpiece, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in publisher's marbled card slipcase with hand-numbered paper on spine. Ticket of Gotham Book Mart and colour stamp on rear pastedown.
