A propos de cet article

pp. 14-25. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to W. Haase. - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise clean. - From the text: Cicero wrote his eulogy of Cato Uticensis within three months of the latters death in April, 46 B. C. and probably published it in November of that year. There is general agreement among scholars that this was more than simply a panegyric. It was an important political statement, containing a defense of the Republican form of government at a time when Caesar, the strong man, had all but established himself and was threatening a change from traditional aristocratic democracy to empire directed by one man. The popularity and importance of the topic and the document are shown by the fact that Brutus, M. Fadius Gallus, and Munatius Plancus also wrote eulogies of Cato and that first Hirtius and then Caesar composed rebuttals of what Cicero had said. In view of the importance of the Cato, it is unfortunate that so little of it has been preserved. Only two fairly colorless fragments survive. In spite of this, scholars have busied themselves with identifying the form of the document and reconstructing its subject matter. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.…
