8vo. (24.5 x 15.5 cm). pp.xxxi+322+xliv+xxxiii. Publisher's original blue cloth with gilt-lettered black cloth labels to spine, top edge gilt. A very good copy. First printed in Dehli in 1933. Revised and continued up to the end of 1930 under the authority of the Government of India. A collection of historic treaties, engagements, and sanads (charters/grants) signed by the East India Company or the British Government and regional leaders, including those of the Persian Gulf and Oman. Included in Vol. XI are several agreements involving Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan (1835-1909), grandfather and namesake of the founder of the United Arab Emirates, who presents an "Agreement executed by the Shaikh of Abu Dhabi engaging not to commit any breach of the maritime peace" from 1868, an "Agreement entered into by the Shaikh of Abu Dhabi for the suppression of the slave trade" from 1873, and an "Agreement executed by the Shaikh of Abu Dhabi promising not to enter into any agreement with any foreign power, not to admit the agent of any foreign government and not to cede, sell or mortgage any part of his territory" from 1892. Furthermore, an "Undertaking given by the Shaikh of Dibai in regard to the exploitation of oil [and] Similar undertakings given by the Shaikhs of Abu Dhabi, Ajman, and Umm-al-Qaiwain" was negotiated in August of 1922 and involved the sheikh of Abu Dhabi Hamdan bin Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan (d. 1922) just three months before his death in a palace coup. Aitchison (1832-1896) went out to India as a civil servant in September 1856, narrowly escaping a massacre at Hissar in 1857 before being stationed at Amritsar. In 1865 he took up administrative work in the Punjab, where he was "extremely industrious and thorough in his work. He exercised a marked influence on successive governors-general, who trusted him for advice" (ODNB). He commenced a compilation entitled A Collection of Treaties, Engagements, and Sanads Relating to India and Neighbouring Countries in 1862 and eleven volumes were issued by 1892. In 1882 he became governor-general of the Punjab, where he advocated for the Indianization of the civil service.…
