Synopsis :

Rare book

Présentation de l'éditeur: This is a collection of twelve essays written by daughters of Holocaust survivors. The women -- artists, writers, poets, filmmakers, a photographer, a musician, and an actress -- have found a strong voice through their work, and their work has been both a life force and a lifesaver. The editor, too, is the daughter of Holocaust survivors...her parents survived Auschwitz. The contributors include Helen Epstein, author of "Children of the Holocaust"; Aviva Kempner, the filmmaker who produced "The Partisans of Vilna" and "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg"; and Rosie Weisel, the Israeli graphic artist who is the editor's sister-in-law. The introduction is by Eva Fogelman, author of "Conscience & Courage: Rescuers of Jews during the Holocaust." The book also includes a number of poignant photographs of family members and their personal accounts of growing up in the shadow of the Holocaust. "Mindy Weisel and the other daughters of Holocaust survivors have provided us with extraordinary insights. The solemn beauty of their sagas and the triumph over the past is a gift to their parents, who survived and rebuilt their lives, and to those millions who did not." -- Susan Tumarkin Goodman of the Jewish Museum New York "Each in her own genre, these 'daughters of absence' trace -- with great skill, great courage, and great candor -- their journey from a ghost-ridden past to a fulfilling present." -- Peter Novick, author of The Holocaust in America, professor of history at The University of Chicago

Hardcover. Etat : Very good. Etat de la jaquette : Very good. xxxvi, 216 , [4] pages. Illustrations (some in color). This copy has an author signed personal inscription on the fep that reads: "For Dearest Ben - the close & true friend of my daughter who is never absent - With my love (from my heart). Mindy 2001". Creative daughters transform their parents' Holocaust darkness into a celebration of life. All the writers were daughters of Holocaust survivors. Mindy Weisel, an internationally renowned artist, author and speaker, was elected into the Smithsonian Archives of American Artists in 2000. Her works are in the permanent collections of the National Museum of American Art, Oxford University and the Israel Museum, among other public and private collections. Weisel is the author of DAUGHTERS OF ABSENCE: Transforming a Legacy of Loss; TOUCHING QUIET: Reflections in Solitude, and her latest book: AFTER: The Obligation of Beauty . She is a member of the United States Art in Embassies program. "As daughters of Holocaust survivors, we were buds growing from nearly dead branches," writes artist Mindy Weisel in 'Daughters of Absence,' "But we are the daughters of the future. We turned to the artistic and the creative expressions of life's beauty in celebrating their survival." In this moving tribute, a distinguished group of creative women collaborate to reveal what it was like to grow up in the shadow of their parents' Holocaust ordeal and how they transformed that legacy into the beauty of their films, art, photographs, poems, stories, and lives. So much has been written about the horrors -- this book is a moving tribute to the human spirit. Includes an essay by Hadassah Lieberman, wife of Senator Joe Liberman.
