The signed document is a contract related to turning the play, "The Millionairess," by George Bernard Shaw, into a film to be directed by Sturges. Katherine Hepburn, who starred in the Broadway play, wanted Sturges to direct the film, but financing was not found. The film was to be produced by Lester Cowan (1906-90). Cowan addressed this contractual agreement to Sturges, "c/o Famous Artists Corp." Sturges signed above his typed name, "Preston Sturges." Cowan also signed as author of the contract, "Lester Cowan." Two additional documents are included related to the project's demise. One is a list of pre-production expenses, one page, 4to, signed by Cowan. The second is a 4 page agreement between Cowan and business manager Howard Lawn, signed by both and initialed in 8 places. Some toning. Lester Cowan started in silent films and then turned to producing his own films including the classic 1940 film "My Little Chickadee," with W. C. Fields and Mae West. In 1953, the year of this document group on "The Millionairess," he produced one of his last pictures, "Main Street to Broadway," about the difficulties of writing for the theater. Cowan was also involved in the start of the Academy Awards. He served as executive secretary (now director) of the academy from 1931 to 1933. "The Millionairess" was eventually turned into a film in 1960, directed by Anthony Asquith and starring Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers.…
