THE RARE THIRD EDITION ENLARGED 'INSCRIBED FROM THE AUTHOR' IN THE HEAD MARGIN OF THE HALF-TITLE PAGE - THE EARLIEST MONOGRAPH DEVOTED TO THE MALVERN WATERS AND CONSIDERED THE BEST EDITION. By J. Wall, M.D., physician at Worcester and former Fellow of Merton College, Oxford. This copy is clean and securely bound in grey paper-covered boards with a paper title on the spine. The text block is in excellent condition and complete, including the Appendix that was added to this edition, although it could also be purchased separately as an add-on for the two earlier editions. Note about the Author: JOHN WALL (1708?1776), a physician born in Powick, Worcestershire, was the son of John Wall, a tradesman in Worcester. He published an essay in the 'Gentleman's Magazine' in December 1751 on the cure of putrid sore throat, where he, like John Fothergill, recorded cases of scarlet fever and diphtheria without distinguishing between them. Wall was the first medical writer to highlight the similarity between the condition in humans and epidemic foot-and-mouth disease in cattle, a suggestion of significant importance. In 1756, he published in Worcester a fourteen-page pamphlet titled 'Experiments and Observations on the Malvern Waters.' This pamphlet was reissued in a third edition in 1763 and was enlarged to 158 pages. As with all works of this nature, it describes numerous cures that were evidently due to causes other than the waters themselves.
