A wonderful book detailing the history of fishing at Port Isaac on the north coast of Cornwall. Written by Geoff Provis, a member of a local fishing family, the book provides a unique insight into the lives of the traditional fishermen. Subjects covered include pilchard seining, herring drifting, potting, mackerel fishing and other types of local fishing. Also superstitions, myths and legends, local sayings, how to make withy pots, withy gardens, names of coastal marks, winds and weather, local characters including humorous stories and the history of Port Isaac Harbour. This book really is unique and has been very well received by locals and visitors to the area who are very interested in Port Isaac. It is a tribute to the men who worked traditional boats on a harsh coast. Much of the information and lore contained has been gleaned from the author's family and from other senior local members of fishing families who have willingly provided Geoff with anecdotes and information handed down from their ancestors. A fascinating read featuring numerous archive photographs.
À propos de l?auteur: Geoff Provis spent his younger years employed on his family fishing boats. He talked to men who fished under sail and who experienced a way of life now completey gone - the holiday industry having taken over Port Isaac. Alas, he could not afford to go fishing so he followed a career elsewhere. However, the sea has never left him and he hopes this book will be seen as a fitting tribute to the people who gained a living from the sea in bygone days.
