First edition of this memoir of J.C. Penney and his retail empire. Octavo, original publisher's half-cloth, frontispiece of J.C. Penney. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Major Benjamin Namm - This book is inscribed in appreciation of the splendid service he is rendering the N.R.D.G.A. Compliments and best wishes of the author - J.C. Penney of 2-7-52." Benjamin Namm was the president of Nammâs department store in Brooklyn and the president of the National Retail Dry Goods Association (N.R.D.G.A.). Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Fifty Years with the Golden Rule by J.C. Penney is a reflective business memoir that traces the growth of the J.C. Penney Company through the lens of its founderâs unwavering commitment to ethical principles, particularly the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Published in 1950, the book offers insight into early 20th-century American retail, emphasizing the role of personal integrity, faith, and customer service in the development of a national commercial empire. Penneyâs narrative blends autobiography with business philosophy, presenting his success not merely as a financial achievement but as a moral enterprise grounded in Christian values.
