Synopsis
Hope On Hatterask is fundamentally a true story about three very different early nineteenth century characters who are brought together through an unlikely series of profound events in each of their lives. They are: Elijah, an adolescent orphaned Scotch Irish boy struggling to survive the port ghettos of Northern Ireland; Embato, a proud young West African warrior whose whole life is abruptly and dramatically altered forever by both fellow Africans and pale skinned intruders from lands an ocean away; and a brave adolescent Eastern Coastal Native American woman who faces constant oppression and danger on a colonized continent that only two centuries earlier was occupied and controlled exclusively by her own people. The story takes place in the early 1800s and chronicles their lives from early adolescence through early young adulthood. Each character’s individual culture, ethnicity, spirituality, geography of origin, and ancestral history is explored in detail. Their stories are told in their voice from their perspective and with candor. There are two broader perspectives that bare mention: 1) It is important to recognize that the three main characters represent, in a general way, the three racial/ethnic groups that comprise the vast majority of the American population today. And they certainly represent those who played the most significant role in shaping what American society is today since the first recorded contact between English speaking Europeans and Native Americans. They are Red, Black, and White people. 2) Although their story is certainly one of unusual events, it is your ancestor’s story as well. The simple fact of your existence is proof that those who came before you also persevered and endured what surely must have been at times seemingly insurmountable odds against their survival. So please read this adventurous and often emotionally charged accounting of the lives of two of my ancestors and of their beloved friend with a vision of your own ancestry. Perhaps you will identify with one, or another, or all three for your own reasons. And if so, then my prayer for you is that you will discover or rediscover a profound respect and appreciation for your own ancestral past. Perhaps in doing so you may even move forward in some way with a renewed hope for your future There are secondary characters that are colorful and provide more cultural depth within the overall story as well. And they also support the general themes of religious and ethnic diversity, preservation of threatened traditional indigenous values, and perhaps most importantly of all, the incredible power of hope. They are adherent to their own religious beliefs and cultural expressions and include: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Traditional Native American Spirituality. Hope On Hatterask is written with an intent to provide balance in rich accurate unbiased history along with the excitement of life threatening adventures. Again, the basic elements of the story did in fact take place…….but approximately two hundred years ago. Thus in order to reconstruct the entire story it was necessary to dramatize such events and to create fictionalized dialogue. But all the events and much of the dialogue is very likely to have taken place based on what I know to actually be true. Still, for the sake of full credibility here I felt it necessary to have Hope On Hatterask categorized within the genre of historical fiction. Please enjoy! And please pass on the opportunity to others for their own edification, enjoyment, and ancestral pride. Thanks. Gray
