A propos de cet article
(BELLEVUE HOSPITAL). ALS. 4pg. May 2, 1858. Bellevue Hospital, New York. An autograph letter signed Jimmie to Lizzie. Writing on Bellevue Hospital letterhead, Jimmie wrote in part: Will suppose I do go steaming down Broadway with the cool breeze playing on my forehead cooling the burning thoughts that always nestle there will that at all detract from the pleasure which shall possess me when mine eye lights on your well remembered faces - will the fact that my hat is on the back of my head not make the politeness greater when I go so far back to get that delicate appendage to the habiliments of our sex - suppose I do pass by many a dear friend will it not be a mark of my affection toward you that I keep a sharp lookout and pick you out from a crowd of fair creatures - will my sharp and hard duties at Bellevue prevent my promenading much - and when that time arrives it comes on a Saturday and crowds are out and you see all in a lump like a weekly paper giving the condensed news of the several days - Next to a small party the bright and as we frequently have in our beloved city - danced a little by way of variety - had to limp all the way up to the Hospital was attacked by two large black dogs they looked like bulls in the night time - couldn't run I was so lame so threw sundry paving stones in divers directions was so exhausted that I didn't care whether they bit me or not collected my scattered senses and listened heard a distant yelping about two miles off felt courageous and pushed on met a party of young fellows a "sheet or two in the wind" with the vest flapping didn't care for my own species so boldly pushed my way through reached the iron gate and my room arrived there rather the worse for wear - Jerusalem - Liz feels mightily tired out as if the current is more superficial than usual but it done to the score of the spirit willing but the flesh weak - Should I happen to cross your paths while you are here you must come up with me and see what a nice cozy sea breezy cool comfortable apt [apartment] is the place I now call home - the other night I leaned out of the window and looking at the moonlight on the water of the bay dotted here and there by a light-sending revolving out a guide to the homeward bound while in the distance were the countless lights of the great city but lest you may think I grow romantic here, will halt and drop into some other by-path - oh guns and short barrelled blunderbusses what a magnificent specimen of female mechanism I saw to day consoled myself with the idea that I didn't care about knowing her for surely she was coquettish, vain - a know-nothing, spoilt, sick puny, worn out by dissipation extravagant cross-grained, soured & c with the pleasing prospect of loss of peace of mind, and a long lingering miserable life for these ideals don't die easy - took a good long breath - look around to be sure that I was I - congratulated myself that I could flap my wings free and halloo - now go to snooze and dream of Lizzie. The letter is in fine condition.…
