This scholarly work delves into the historical and cultural significance of the inscriptions, providing detailed analysis and interpretation of the texts. Karkowski's meticulous research sheds light on the religious, political, and social contexts of the period, making it an invaluable resource for Egyptologists, historians, and enthusiasts of ancient Egyptian civilization. The book includes images of the inscriptions, alongside translations and commentary, offering readers a deeper understanding of the Pharaonic era's epigraphy and its impact on the region's history. -- Contents: I. Historical Problems 1 Discovery of Pharaonic Faras 2 Historical Value of the Archaeological and Epigraphical Sources from Faras 3 Geographical Position of Faras and the Known Sites with Pharaonic Material 4 Problem of the Ancient Toponyms Connected with Faras 5 Origin of the Fragments Found Inside the Meroitic Enclosure and Their Importance for Studies on the Lower Nubian Temples Outside Faras [Tuthmoside Fragments (Question of the Buhen Origin; Importance); Post-Tuthmoside Fragments] 6 History of Pharaonic Faras [Hathor Rock (The Temple; Chapel of Setau); Walled Town of Tutankhamun (The Temple; Chapel of Huy and Ta-em-wadjsy and the Minor Objects); Meroitic Enclosure [Tuthmoside Fragments (Architraves, Door & Wall Fragments, Figures of Divinity, Royal & Unidentified Figures, Bird-Shaped Tutelary Divinities, Wall Friezes), Post-Tuthmoside Fragments (Ramesside & Taharka Fragments)]; Indices (General; Egyptian; Concordances of the Museums and Catalogue Numbers); Plates -- The history of Lower Nubia presents a special problem to those who have devoted their studies to it. On one hand, the fact that almost all the Lower Nubian sites were inundated after the construction of the New High Dam conditions work on the history of this land. Unlike other areas, it will be impossible to verify during future field works the results obtained from an examination of the available material. On the other hand, the great amount of new data, revealed during the international salvage works, provides the possibility to understand in an incomparably better way those changes to which this land and its population had been subjected. This work is, first of all, intended to present and comment on the objects from Faras West which belong to the Pharaonic Period and which bear hieroglyphic inscriptions and representations to which these inscriptions refer. This category of objects contains fragments of the inscribed and decorated temple blocks, parts of stelae, inscribed statues, scarabs and seals. The earliest of them date to the Second Intermediate Period, the majority belong to the New Kingdom and several blocks of Taharka of the XXVth Dynasty form the latest group. The second objective of the present work is to restore the history of Faras during the Pharaonic Period on the basis of the known objects and the other evidence available to the author. In this task reference is also made to the uninscribed objects (amulets, figurines, etc.) as well as the architectural remains of the same period which are known from Griffith's published report and/or documented by the author in Khartoum, London and Oxford.…
