A propos de cet article

An interesting collection of typed manuscipts of short stories sent to Marin Bax for publication in his magazine Ambit on foolscap paper with his name and Baltimore address and phone number all typed recto only. They were sent on with a signed typed and handwritten covering letter to J G Ballard ( 'Dear Jim') enclosing several other pieces - Bax writes of the stories 'all a bit marginal.Steve Dixon is probably the best of the bunch.' Ballard has written on Bax's letter in sesponse to Bax's invitation to supper. 'Martin. When things quieten down would be very nice - huge PR campaign is engulfing me like World War 2- the LA to NYC trip was great. I hired a car and drove all over. The USA is just like a huge movie, Jim.' Also on a scrap of paper is a handwritten signed note by Ballard about Dixon's Frog piece ' It certainl is a very powerful piece of writng - a tremendous sustained effort buit as you say it doesn't go anywehere.' with handwritten notes by Bax for his reply to Dixon. There is also the copy of a reply by Bax to Dixon ' the best piece as it seems to Jimand me is FROG TAKES A SWIM. The curious thing is that Ian MCewen has recently published a novel on . a similar them, about a father loses a childat a supermarket .in a very much similar way. Jim and I feel.this piece needs a diufferent twist to it.' There is a signed handwritten reply to this from Dixon offering 'Frog Dies' instead also talking about his new novel 'Garbage' ( 2 pp)The typed stories comprise 'The Other Howard' (pp 18) 'The Memory' (12pp) 'Looking for the Dead' (14pp) 'Frog's Brother' ( 30 pp with address in Dixon's hand and penciiled note by Bax 'reject pile') 'Frog Takes a Swim (35 pp withe Dixon's handwritten address) Stephen Dixon (1936 - 2019) was an American author of novels and short stories, many highly experimental in style. He was the fifth of seven children of Florence Leder, a beauty queen, chorus girl on Broadway, and interior decorator, and Abraham M. Ditchik. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1958 and was a faculty member of Johns Hopkins University. In his early 20s he worked as a journalist and in radio, interviewing such political figures as John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Nikita Khrushchev.Dixon was nominated for the National Book Award twice, in 1991 for Frog and in 1995 for Interstate. Frog, at 860 pages, was his longest and most ambitious novel, and garnered reviews comparing the work favorably to James Joyce's Ulysses. He also was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Prize for Fiction, the O.
