A propos de cet article
[Zines][Sci-Fi][Literature] Archive of five issues of "Spacewarp", the personal fanzine of Arthur H. Rapp, one of the most prolific contributors to the Spectator Amateur Press Society (SAPS). Produced in Baltimore between 1968 and 1969. Spacewarp provided a platform for Rapp s engagement with fan commentary, philosophical satire, and bibliographic documentation of emerging science-fiction. Art and layout were collaboratively executed with Nancy June Rapp, whose contributions in illustration and production design lend the issues their visual charm. Archive includes: [1] Spacewarp 81. Baltimore, MD: Art & Nancy Rapp, April 1968. SAPS #87. Features a cartoonish, menacing creature cover drawn by Nancy Rapp in thick black ink and pastel watercolor. The issue includes "The Gripes of Rapp," a lighthearted commentary on houseplants, cold snaps, and amateur publishing obligations, as well as a colophon-style editorial in which Art Rapp reflects on the difficulty of balancing fandom duties with everyday life, tongue-in-cheek predictions from Jeanne Dixon, and notes on SAPS politics. [2] Spacewarp 84. Baltimore, MD: Arthur H. Rapp, Spring 1969. Contains reprinted poetic essays "Fragments" (from Hodge-Podge #6, Feb 1954) and "Pleasure" (from Ignatz #16, Spring 1957) exploring philosophical and fan themes. These verses satirize classical philosophers (Plato, Aristotle, Bacon, Hegel) and reflect on the joys of miserdom. Illustrated by Nancy June Rapp, including the notable "STF Holocaust title-page." [3] Spacewarp 86. Baltimore, MD: Arthur H. Rapp, 1969. Opens with "The Gripes of Rapp" which satirizes SAPS administrative decisions and continues Rapp s fan commentary on cultural absurdities, including Danny Kaye s declining relevance and misfit stereo systems. Also includes miscellaneous commentary on cover art and fanzine pricing. This issue marks Rapp s shift toward increasingly metafan content and gentle provocations. [4] Spacewarp 87. Baltimore, MD: Arthur H. Rapp, 1969. Titled The SAPSzine Index, this is a substantial bibliographic compilation of Spectator Amateur Press Society publications from Mailings 1 82. Compiled by Rapp with data support from Rich Eney and Ed Cox, it represents one of the few fan-led attempts to systematically catalog SAPS publishing history. Includes detailed methodology and cross-referencing rules. [5] Spacewarp 89. Baltimore, MD: Arthur H. Rapp, 1969. Includes "The Gripes of Rapp… Thru Darkest Mailing 83 With Cynic Snarl & Fiendish Glee," written post-Army retirement and filled with humorous reflections on civilian life, gardening, and SAPS politics. The Spectator 83 section includes a critique of SAPS leadership and tongue-in-cheek musings on fan hierarchy. Illustrated cover features futuristic rocket spires in violet ink, with art signed "D.R." Staple-bound in illustrated wrappers, varies in mimeograph color. Light staple oxidation and minor edgewear throughout. Overall very good condition. Spacewarp cultivated a unique tone, both self-effacing and literate, capturing a specific strain of fandom that privileged introspection, critique, and collective memory over fiction writing. An archive notable for its mix of wit, bibliographic documentation, and personal voice during an period of growing popularity for science fiction and fandom.
