Item description from seller

As new condition white linen boards with gold spine lettering contained in an as new condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Preface; Dedication; Acknowledgments and Recipe Index. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. Signed and inscribed by the author, Doris Reynolds, with black ink on the blank first free front endpaper. "Take a trip down memory land with Doris Reynolds. Veteran journalist and author, Doris Reynolds has been observing the Naples scene since 1952. She knew and wrote about many of the original settlers of Naples and has chronicled their history for more than 40 years. Join her in remembering.Speed Menefee, Naples' first mayor who servied for 15 minutes. Junkie Fleischmann, the man who served roasted peacocks. Fred Lowdermilk, the man who used alligators to clean the sewers. The Queen of Marco Island, Tommie Barfield, and indomitable woman. Ed Frank, master mechanic and inventor of the Swamy Buggy. Plus recipes from Naples' earliest hotels, restaurants and inns, pioneer family recipes, photographs of early Naples and those hearty pioneers." - from the rear outer jacket. "Doris Reynolds arrived in Naples, Florida in 1952 when less than 2,000 people lived here. She was hired as executive vice president and executive manager of the Naples Chamber of Commerce. She served in that capacity for four years and then started the town's first publishing, advertising and public relations agency. Naples was on the brink of its greatest growth, and Mrs. Reynolds became an integral part of promoting the area. She met and knew many of the original settlers and their descendants, and from the very beginning, she kept scrupulous records of these historical details. In her magazines, The Naples Guide and Naples Now, she wrote frequently on the history of the region. In 1988, Mrs. Reynolds sold her company and rather than retire began a new career as a food and travel writer for The Naples Daily News. This interest in food led to her first book, Let's Talk Food, published in 1991. In When Peacocks Were Roasted and Mullet Was Fried, Mrs. Reynolds combines the history of Naples with tales of the culinary creations during those early days. There are many recipes from early inns, restaurants and hotels; others have been contributed by some of the early pioneers. This is a book about those people who discovered Naples and how their vision for the future was transmuted into a splendid, modern city. This is a book about those indomitable individuals who saw beyond mosquito-infested swamps, the dangers of hurricanes and almost unendurable isolation to a city that is now considered one of the world's most desirable." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

Description de la boutique

Vero Beach Books is an antiquarian bookseller with a constantly updated inventory of rare out-of-print books, signed books, children's books, plus a large inventory of ephemeral items such as major U.S. city newspapers going back 100 years and more, golden and silver age fine condition comic books (soon to be added), and many other ephemeral items as well as much more recent popular volumes. We have been in business for 25 years, originally known as Emerson Books (named after one of our owner's favorite authors, to wit, Ralph Waldo Emerson) located back then in Westport, Connecticut. That said, we are here to serve you, to offer you fine quality items that are conservatively described so that you will always be pleasantly surprised and delighted with your purchase. Twenty-five years in the bookselling business has borne out our stellar service oriented reputation; the only difference is that now we are located in the almost always sunny and warm climate of Vero Beach, Florida. Again, we are here to serve you and, as was the case when we were previously known on ABEBooks.com as Emerson Books, we will continue to offer our very popular 100% free search service for those hard to find books rare and out of print books. Oftentimes we are also able to obtain these rare finds at very good discounts to our customers' so it is always worth contacting us in such cases!
