Item description from seller

Chartwell and Woodford, 1945 and 1959. A typed letter signed by Sir Winston S. Churchill on his Chartwell, Westerham, Kent headed notepaper, dated October 1959. One page, quarto, addressed "Dear Mr. Archer" and personally signed by Churchill in blue ink beneath the valediction. Written following the 1959 General Election, the letter thanks Archer for his voluntary work during the campaign: "I am most grateful to you for all you did in the recent Election Campaign. The successful outcome is much due to the many voluntary Conservative workers who gave up so much of their time to the Party." The election of 8 October 1959 was Churchill's last parliamentary contest. He retained Woodford with a majority of 14,797 and entered his final Parliament as Father of the House. A particularly appealing late Churchill letter, connecting the recipient directly with his final successful election campaign. Together with an earlier envelope addressed to Miss Hazel Archer at 8 Malford Grove, E.18, franked with a George VI 1d stamp and postmarked Woodford, 9.15 a.m., 25 July 1945. The verso is separately signed in blue ink by Churchill's wife, Clementine S. Churchill, and their youngest daughter, Mary Churchill, later Baroness Soames. The Woodford cancellation is dated to the eve of the delayed declaration of the 1945 General Election result. Churchill retained his constituency despite the national Labour landslide which ended his wartime premiership. The envelope therefore provides a compelling local and political counterpoint to the later letter: one piece associated with the election which removed Churchill from office and the other with his final electoral victory fourteen years later. The envelope is associated Archer-family material rather than the original mailing envelope for the 1959 letter. Also accompanied by an early twentieth-century colour-tinted postcard of Lourdes, captioned "Les Pyrénées — 45. Lourdes — Le Saint-Sacrement aux Malades"; its precise connection with the Churchill material is unrecorded. The letter with its original horizontal and vertical mailing folds, light creasing, handling marks and minor edge wear; the Churchill signature strong and clear. The envelope toned and extensively creased, with opening tears and small splits around the folds and flap junction; the Clementine and Mary signatures remain distinct and legible. The postcard with light rubbing and toning. Unframed.
