Item description from seller

though with a few documents of earlier (1848) and later (1902) date. The collection derives from the estate of R.J.G. Griffiths, formerly Head Brewer for the London firm of Mann, Crossman & Paulin which in 1896 sold its Burton-on-Trent brewery, built in 1875, to the newly established 'Albion (Burton-on-Trent) Brewery Limited', which itself seems to have been a new manifestation of the former Burton & Lincoln Breweries Ltd. Griffiths' services were retained and he became a director of the new company. A series of sixteen typed letters (1895-1900) from his co-directors and the company secretary set out the terms of his appointment and associated investments, together with other matters. His original share certificate is also here. Ten other printed items include the original company prospectus, two variant copies of the 45pp. Memorandum and Articles of Association, mortgages and leases concerning the purchase of land, and prospectuses for the issue of additional shares; of particular interest are the complete lists of all the brewery's licensed premises, freehold, leasehold, copyhold &c, throughout England. Five further legal documents (1848-99, two on paper, three on parchment) relate to a public house and adjacent property in Enfield; one bears the great seal, slightly chipped, of the Duchy of Lancaster. The last group consists of carbon typescripts of the agendas of board meetings from April 1896 to May 1898; these amount to something over 100pp. and provide a unique insight into the management and finances of the company, with details such as amounts spent on hops, costs of cooperage and numerous other expenses from purchases of property to the shoeing of dray horses. Most of the agendas and many of the other documents bear Griffiths' annotations, sometimes extensive. Condition generally good, but most of the items have been tightly folded for a long period; all have now been unfolded.
