A propos de cet article

J. Ment. Sc., 20. - Kewes : Geo. P. Bacon, Stem Printing Office, July 1875, 8°, 19 pp., feine card board. Rare Offprint! "I wish here to give as briefly as possible an account of the pathology of the nervous symptoms which result from syphilis. Of necessity there is considerable recapitulation from former papers I have written. For syphilis produces very different affections of the nervous system, and I have therefore had to speak of syphilis when considering Amaurosis, Epileptiform seizures, Hemiplegia, &c. It is, however, justifiable to bring together the conclusions one has arrived at about syphilitic nervous affections from the study of nervous affections in general. A great deal of work has now been done, both in this country and abroad, on syphilitic diseases of the nervous system, and recently there have appeared the masterly lectures by Broadbent, and the most valuable book by Buzzard on these affections. It is a very difficult task to write on such a subject after these able physicians. I shall, therefore, limit myself. I wish simply to consider syphilitic nervous affections as I have seen them myself; thus my task is considerably narrowed." Jackson "Perhaps influenced by the work of his friend Jonathan Hutchinson, Jackson dedicate two early publications to neurosyphilis; and later he wrote two reviews on the subject. In 'The syphilitic affections of the nervous system' (1875), perhaps the more important of the two, he explored the issue of syphilitic paralysis of the cranial nerves and the relationship between syphilitic lesions and convulsions, epilepsy and hemiplegia." López Piñero J. Classic Text No. 82: The work of John Hughlings Jackson: Part 2. History of Psychiatry. 21/2 2010: pp.224-236. John Hughlings Jackson (1835-1911) was a British neurologist whose studies of epilepsy, speech defects, and nervous-system disorders arising from injury to the brain and spinal cord helped to define modern neurology. "He created the conceptual framework for clinical neurophysiology, the discipline that underlies diagnostic neurology. He began by establishing a consistent scientific method based on the systematic analysis of anatomy, pathology and physiology. This method revolved around his concept of the focal lesion, a concept that he refined and which became a cornerstone of bedside neurology. He recognized that focal epilepsy and focal necrosis can be viewed as reciprocal physiological processes, and concluded that somatotopic representation is found in the entire nervous system including the cortex." An Introduction to the Life and Work of John Hughlings Jackson: Introduction. Med Hist Suppl., 26 (2007): pp.; 3-34.…
