A propos de cet article

Two Government of Canada Reports 1) Report on Baie Verte Canal by Samuel Keefer, C. E., 18 February, 1973, with Mr. Gzowski s Approval Prefixed; 2) Baie Verte Canal, Report of the Chief Engineer of Public Works, on the Construction of a Canal between the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Bay of Fundy, Ottawa, printed by L. B. Taylor, 1874 with detailed fold-out map of the proposed canal. Note, the Baie Verte Canal is also known as the Chignecto Canal, The following is an excerpt from Macleans magazine dated July 15, 1931 For nearly 250 years it has been in the mind of man to join the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Bay of Fundy by an artificial waterway. There are only four leagues to be traversed by land to go from French Bay (Chignecto) to Baie Verte, and the portage may easily be cut through by a canal since all the land is very low. This post-Confederation effort was perhaps the closest to getting approval. Headed by Sir Hugh Allan and including such eminent scientists of the time as Sir Casimir Gzowski and Samuel Keefer, they declared the Chignecto Canal to be an undertaking of first importance, essential to the welfare and prosperity of the whole country. Having been appointed to examine the entire canal situation of the Dominion, this Commission grouped the Chignecto project with the Sault Ste. Marie Canal, the Lachine Canal, and necessary improvements at Welland and in the upper St. Lawrence. The 1873 strongly recommends the Canal and the 1874 report is about the technical aspects of the constructions. The map measures 17.5 by 9.5 and is in fine condition. The government standard blue covers of the 1873 report, 23 pages, are slightly dogeared but the contents are in near-fine condition. The cover of the 1874 is just hanging on but the report itself, 89 pages, is very sound and in very good condition. Extremely rare publications from the canal era.…
