First Edition. Fine copy in slightly frayed dust-wrapper. The DEDICATION COPY: beneath the printed dedication "For Maurice Ostrer for his constant encouragement" the author has added his autograph signature. On the front free end-paper he has written: "For Bill [Maurice Ostrer], who gave me my chance. With gratitude, James. June 1945" Rubeigh James Minney, novelist, biographer, playwright and film producer, was editor of The Sunday Referee for some years. He collaborated with Osbert Sitwell, who was one of his Sunday Referee columnists, on the play Gentle Caesar, 1943. Minney's books include Carve Her Name with Pride. The present volume is a novel "fashioned upon the loom of historic events in our own time" and concerns the family Laval "whose son is to play so nefarious a part in the destiny of France".
